American Tires
American Tires
I'm not sure about ya'll, but I try to buy American goods every chance I can. Sometimes it's near impossible. Recently, my quest has been tires. I really liked the Falken AT's, good reviews, great price...Asian. Same goes for Hankook and plenty others.
I'm not sure how legit this site is, but looks to be some good info. Think I'll be going back to my tried and true BFG's (maybe Cooper if I'm feeling like saving a little)

disappointed this never got more traffic. maybe because it's something I feel strongly about. anyhoo, buddy called me today for recommendations, I came back to this thread to find the website name, alas, it is down...
Some Toyo/Nitto tires are made here, but obviously they're a Japanese company. My BFG Rugged Terrains were made here, I think/hope haha. I think all Coopers are made here and they're an American company. Never owned a set, but I went into Discount Tire for their LTZ or ATP or AT3, which are priced right around the Falkens, but got the BFGs instead.
It is odd how most of the best options are foreign.

best and foreign aren't synonyms, for me, for tires. all the serious off road and racing tires are American. Can't say that I'm involved with either, but I feel like there's enough 'Murican choices. Cooper, BFG, Goodyear, Kelly, Firestone/Bridgestone (can't remember), General Tire I think is another that's Foreign owned, American built. Glad there's other on the same page.
The issue I have is that my BFGs aren't even gonna make it to 30k miles, not real happy with them after only 8k miles. But to be fair, 2 of my wheels need higher balancing weight, but I've been very good about air pressure and rotating every 4k miles with them because of that.
I think Firestone, Bridgestone, and Continetal all are American and are all not very good. I know for sure that FS is. Kelly's actually seem good from what I've seen, but they only make small tires and nothing for my 20s if I remember right. My dad's Mustang GT has gotten almost exactl 40k miles out of each set of BFGs, and just slapped a 3rd set. 40k is alright.
For MTs, I feel the Toyos are a mile ahead of everyone else. KM2s are nice, but they're $550 a tire for a 35 on 20.
You're definitely not alone, and we're both from Houston!

My Coopers were made here in the USA, and that's a large reason why I bought them. If anyone's looking, my AT3's have been real solid tires. Got about 30k on them now and they've still got tons of tread left. I'd say they have at least half, probably more, left.

I to believe in American products. I recently read the April '14 Consumer Reports annual car ratings issue. In it, it ranked the top five tire brands. the best rated All Terrain tire was the Cooper A/T3, the Michelin LTX A/T2. The other three rated brands I can't remember off hand, But I do remember no other popular tire was in the rating, including any Goodyear, BF Goodrich, Nitto, etc.. Cooper is based in Ohio and Texas. Cooper also manufacture or own Mastercraft, Avon tyres, Mickey Thompson, Roadmaster and a few others. Just read all this on their website.
It was Consumer Reports. And their annual car rating issue. The tire ratings were in several categories, such as Performance, Passenger, Touring, All-Terrain, etc.. In each category it only listed the top five brands and model tire. I believe that the ratings came from testing they do, and customer surveys. I do remember something about surveys for sure. I was just thumbing thru it at a doctors office. Can probably find it on line, if they don't charge you a fee that is.
