LT Tire?

So my F150 came with the LT275/65/18 tires...

The last 2 sets I have bought were the Toyo Open Country AT in LT 275/65/18. I am about to buy new tires and am wondering if I really need the LT rated tires. I haven't towed anything in about a year. The tires of this size and the P metric tires seem to vary in price and seem to overlap.

Any thoughts?

PS...I am not going to replace with new Toyo's...I haven't been real happy with them. Would really like the BFG All Terrain...

Regards!

P series tires are "adequate" on an F150, as long as the max load for the tire is at least 2200lbs. The reason I say 2200 is that on a truck, you can not use what is listed on the tire as max load, but about 10% less than that value and your rear axle is rated at around 4000 lbs. If you have the max tow or heavy duty package, stick with LT tires. Also if the max pressure is 44, you will have to run the tires at at least 35. You will find the truck leans more in turns, and id you do any off highway driving on rough roads (especially gravel/dirt) the tires will not hold up as well.

Thanks for the input Kingfish!

My truck came with the 7200# GVWR Package. I will pprobably stick with the LT tires...

Its amazing how many tires are out there and how the prices overlap for LT and PMetric. I am probably going to do the Struts at the same time as the tires...looking at the Rancho Quick Lift Loaded...

Regards!

PS...the Toyo's inflated to 40 psi per the door sticker always look flat...especially on the front. I usually run them at 45 psi...

Some tires have an XL rating which is in between a P and a LT rating. That may be a good choice also. I've been running LT rated tires for the extra strength and helping to avoid flat's that were a big problem after Hurricane Katrina.

Toyo makes tires in that size in LR C and LR E. They would have different recommended pressures. If you have the LR E, 40 would be too low and maybe even 45. What is the pressure and load on the sidewall, ie. lbs at max cold?

Edit - Took a closer look at the Toyo specs. If you have the LR C, 40 would be okay. If you have the LR E, 50 would be better.

Hey, I looked your truck up & for the 7200lb GVWR model it called for the P Metric from the factory. I also got the specs on the Toyo AT models for you.

P275/65/18 (4 ply) max psi 35/ max load 2601 lbs / cost per tire $165

LT275/65/18 (6 ply) max psi 50/ max load 2535 lbs / $205

LT275/65/18 (10 ply) max psi 80/ max load 3415 lbs / $198

Let me know if you have any more tire questions. I've got all the books!

My tires are the Load Range E 80 psi max Cold

Every time I go somewhere for service they always drop the pressure to 40 per the door sticker...guess that is a result of the Ford Firestone fiasco...noone wants to be accused of over inflating the tires. I have found that 45psi makes the tires look less flat, and 50 psi makes the front end rattle with every bump (I know the struts are bad also)... I do check pressure regularly...

Both sets of Toyo's have had balancing issues over their life. I bought both sets at Les Schwab. They have good service, and have re-balanced with every complaint. I rotate and rebalance every 5-6k miles, but sometimes have to return within a day or 2 for a rebalance on the fronts.... This set is at 49k and change with a little left on them...

I was trying too do the math per Toyo's tire guide for adjusting the tire pressure, but the guide seems a bit incomplete...

Thanks for the inputs!

Regards!

The fiasco was due to underinflated tires, which your were at 40.

As far as the truck coming with P series , yes they do, but as I stated the minimum load carrying ability on those tires is 2200lbs. Optional LT LR C tires are available. F150s with the heavy duty package come with LT LR E tires with a recommended pressure of 50.

PS - At 45, I would not carry a load or tow with your tires at that pressure.

It's nice to have tire experts available!

I just got the ok to do the struts, brakes and tires...

I am going to do the Rancho Quick lift loaded and level out the truck. My front rotors are warped, so I will change them at the same time as the struts.

I am looking at the BFG All Terrains...I will stick with the LT tire. Any reviews or opinions of other tires? I had a set of BFG All Terrains on my 02 F150 but didn't put enough miles on them to form an opinion. I traded the truck in about 20k miles after having the tires put on. I really am avoiding Good Year as that is what came on the truck and only lasted about 35k. I guess I get to do some shopping tomorrow!

Regards!
