BFG no more?

When I bought my '08 STX SuperCab, the Michelin LTX tires came on it and I just didn't like the way they felt--seemed like I was turning a block of wood around every corner, just incredibly stiff. BUT everyone else loves them.

So now that my BFGoodrich LTRs are in need of replacing I'm looking at the LTX M/S 2 because of weather fluctuations here in the South but I need to know if anyone has run these new LTXs and if so, how did they feel? Help change my mind from BFG because that set of tires only lasted 40,000 ( not out to blame anyone but the center treads on the tires are almost gone while the rest of the tire looks pretty darn good so I think the dealership has been overinflating them the last few rotations). I had the same tires (BFG) on my '04 Heritage and they went 60,000 with very little treadwear but I'm now leery of BFG.

My truck is a 2WD, on the road truck so I dont need aggressive tires, just ones that will last longer than 40,000 since I put about 25-28,000 miles a year on my truck. Any suggestions will be helpful, and I am willing to look at other tires besides the Michelins....

40k miles is still a damn long time for tires to last. I would be satisfactory with that, but being as you had a set last 60k I see what you mean. The A/T KO will last as long or longer than 60k miles, put the cash toward them they are very well worth it.

Darren,

I checked out the KOs--good looking tire and here in the South there is a lot of road hazards so the 3-ply on them sounds good. So one vote for BFG...anyone else?

BFGoodrich is the top of the line when it comes to off road tires. Period.

Thanks PawPaw and GT,

Like I said, my truck stays on the road 90% of the time so would that be too much noise/too much tire for the purpose I use them for? Buying a semi-dedicated off-road tire would be like putting Nitto Grapplers on a Yugo, it would seem...just don't wanna buy too much tire.

My uncle has m/s2's and they lasted 70,000 miles and traction was actually really good! Dont get ltx a/t 2's if you even had the thought in the back of your head, I have them right now and they look decent and preform well but they throw rocks like crazy!
either way you go your making a good decision

Just get an OEM sized one, 285 max, no off roady look, economy on highway as long as its on a load E 10 ply.

Darren,

I'm running a 55/60 but they don't stock that size so I'm thinking the BFGs P265/70R17--cheapest I can find them around here is 242 a tire. Does that sound like a good price or should I check with TireRack and a couple of other online dealers?

Nitto Duragrappler... Great road oriented tire. I have 43k miles on my Terragrapplers and have more road manners than any BFG AT ever made. I'm fully expecting well over 50k out of mine.

Those Nittos do look good, 7lug. Still searching, still open to other suggestions. A pull still towards the BFGs but now seeing just how many options there are for exceptional tires. Almost as many as there are moving parts in those Transformers toys

Oh btw, I've got the 2v 4.6L in my '08--if I went with the BFGs, being (even slightly) larger than stock, would I be putting more pressure on the tranny or gears? It wouldn't require a beefier gear than the 3.55 open diff I'm running right now, would it?

Sorry, never had a 4x4 or experimented with anything other than stock tire sizes on my trucks...

im running 305/70/17 on stock 3.55 gears, can definitely tell it liked the stock size better, but not a problem at all, and no..you wouldnt be putting pressure on the transmission and gears to mess them up
