305/65/18 vs. 295/70/18

Came down to two diffrent tires, The BFG KO in a 305/65/18 or Trail Grapplers in a 295/70/18.

Wondering about which will hurt performance(towing, ride and mpg) milage out of the tire, ect. I am wanting around the 34" range.(mostly worried about the performance and mpg) Or is there really going to be a diffrence between them since there is only a half inch diffrence between them? Any input would be appreciated Im planing on ordering in the next few weeks. (Sorry for the long post).

the truck is a 05 screw, 2.5 leveling kit, 4x4, 5.4 with 3.73 gears.

I'm running the 295 trails and absolutely love them. On performance, they do take a little out of the truck but with a tuner you don't really notice it to bad. I am getting around 14 in town and 16 to 17 on the highway, and I do live in hilly West Virginia. Take a look at my profile for some pics of the truck, the ones with the topper are 295/70/17 and the ones without are the 295/70/18.

I would do the 305/70R17's. I just like the look of the wider tires. Not going to be a big difference in MPG between them.

I went through this a few months ago. Biggest difference to me was $100/tire more for that size BFG. An inch in tire width isn't worth another $400 to me.

Did you have a tuner before you got the tires?

Here are the 295's on my truck. As posted, they did take a little bit out of the truck but with the tuner its not bad. I say it still runs better than factory with these tires and having it tuned.

As to power, I noticed a slight difference, but not huge by any means. I'm running 295/70/18 Terra Grapplers and so far love them. With the factory tranny settings you'll get more gear hunting, but it's controllable if you pay attention to the way you drive it. I understand the Gryphon/edge will fix that and is worth the money just for the tranny settings.

As to towing: It made a little difference, of course, but again not huge. I think the programmer would eliminate that issue. I still pulled a 16ft. trailer with 3000 lbs of fertilizer a few weeks ago with no problems at all. I figure total weight was around 4500lbs and it handled it just fine. Turn the o/d off and roll on.

I DO NOT currently have a programmer, but intend to at the first opportunity. Hopefully that will be in the form of a Gryphon sometime next week.

MPG's: I was getting about 14 in town before and now get about 12. Same for HWY, lost about 2mpg. Hoping the Gryphon will bring that up some as well.

David

Edited to say: IMHO your move should be the 295/70/18 Nittos and spend the left over $400 for a Gryphon. That would get you in a really good position for the cost of the BFG's alone.

Mph or mpg? The Gryphon should help both, or usually helps mpg, but no guarantees. It does allow you to correct tire size and gearing, among other things. Setting tire size will help a lot of things. A lot of folks are picking up a couple of mpg's which is a bonus.

Sounds like your about in the same spot as me. I was getting 13.5-14. Now it's about dead on 2 less. Some folks with tunes are doing much better with same tires.

MDHawkin above and AZFX4 are good examples. Think you'll find the PHP Gryphon is the most popular. It's based on an Edge Evo, but with upgraded canned tunes and then custom tunes available. I hope to order one tomorrow or Friday. I'll start with canned tunes then order custom tunes later.

Sorry for the late responce, but I am running the canned evo tunes and run a constant 14 mpg using a calculator at fill ups and am very happy with that. I also towed a 22' travel trailer like this and did fine.
