33's and 3.55's
I am running 33's (295/70/17) with the factory 3.55 ls rear end, no issues here. I have the Edge programmer though, without that I may feel the lag a little more.
I tow with mine, use it as a daily driver, city/highway, etc, and love it!

I have an 02 but also running 33's with the 3.55. I have the 5.4 engine. It seems fine to me. I even went to a mud-terrain and you can tell they're heavier, but still get up and go where I need to. I tow a little camper every so often as well.
I have 35's and the OEM 3.55 years. My performance is ok but nothing to brag about. I also don't do any heavy towing or hauling, which also factors into the equation.

Most people that tell you their truck does OK, or just fine, or great with taller tires and stock (3.55) gears are telling you that mainly because they don't know any different. You become numb to how your truck performs. I challenge you to go get gears...specifically 4.10's if you're coming from a 3.55. HOLY COW!
If I ever end up with another truck and end up changing tires, I will budget for gears when I get the tires.
I too fell into the trap these guys listed above, but then finally got gears when I bought my trailer. To date, hands down, no questions asked, the best money, best performance mod I have EVER done to my truck. Literally completely transformed the driving experienc. Also, trying to pull my trailer otherwise would have been completely miserable.

4.10's are not going to be that much different from 3.73's. I'd look into 4.56's. just an idea.
AND...if you wanna go bigger down the road, the gear would be there.
Goodluck.

My gears are the best money I've ever spent on my truck. Fuel mileage went up a point or two, and all the drivability and acceleration I (didn't know) had lost was back. Tranny even works like it's supposed to. Freeway driving is unnoticeable. Its not like its screaming going down the road. I think 2,000 rpm at 65, or there abouts.
