general sizing questions.

Well I'm planning to purchase BFG T/A K/Os for this winter and hoping to get a bit over two years with them properly rotated and such.

I'm running 255/70/17 tires ( General Ameritrac's ) and I was planning to up to a 265 width mostly for looks, but as for 70, I'm wondering if 75 would be a half inch higher than the 70. I'm not very tire oriented so thats why I'm asking. Keeping my OEM 17x7.5 wheels.

I also want to maintain good economy ( 16mpg ), thats why I dont want to go too big yet. So is 265/75/17 alright with a Bilstein level? I dont want my economy to drop alot but I need to have traction in winter.

Also i'm up for suggestions, like if I would be able to keep good economy with a 275 or 285 i'll consider it, and if it would be alright to go to a 75 height. Thanks.

A 285/70R17 would be the perfect size. no leveling kit needed to fit them either.

Ok, that will certainly look a hell of alot better than the 265, but how will my fuel economy be? Will it decrease majorly?

Well ok. 285 seems pretty dang big though, especially with me going from 255, If 275 is availalble in that size I may go with those because I really need my economy now.

EDIT:

Ok never mind that, its 265 or 285 only, well if 285s will fit my OEM wheels, I guess i'll go with them. Just better not lose more than 1mpg with them. I guess this is what i'll get, so 285 will fit on my 17x7.5s?

http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires.jsp?tireMake=BFGoodrich&tireModel=All-Terrain+T%2FA+KO&vehicleSearch=false&partnum=87R7A TAKO&fromCompare1=yes&place=1 Would 285s stick out far also? I dont want my paint destroyed by stones. Just how much wider are 285s compared to 265s in inches?

i would go with the bigger guy, b/c i like the wheel wells filled out a bit more, it would be worth it to lose 1.5 mpgs , thats just me though

1.5 thats too much to me at the moment. I'll stick with the 70 height and go with 285. Just hope I dont lose alot of economy and possible low end.

you will do fine w/ the 285's. keep in mind a lot of these trucks come stock w/ the 265's, and this is only a marginal upgrade above that. remember, your speedo/odo. will be thrown slightly off, so mileage loss will be even less than it appears to be. i would say 1mpg or less. also, i believe w/ the BFG AT's, you can get a load range D in a 285-70-17, which is more preferable than a C range. They will mount and balance just fine, don't fear there.

Power loss would also be very marginal as well. While these tires are heavier than the stockers, they are not an oversize mud terrain tire, either.

Thank you for the advice. Yep i'm going with the 285/70/17s. They are a D range, so right in between C and E, fits me well for as my truck does 50% daily driving, and 50% wood hauling and off road driving. The UPS man dropped my 2" Bilstein leveling kit off today so clearance i'm not worried about, and i'm excited to see how it will look afterwards!
