Is this good wear mileage?

I have a set of Cooper Discoverer H/T's on my 03 Ex, 265/70/17. According to the Cooper website, the start out with 16 32n'd of tread. I have just under 40K miles on mine (about 2yrs) and the rears have 6/32's to go to the wear indicator the front's have about 4/32's to the wear indicator.

If I consider the wear indicator the bottom line, then I really only have 14/32's of usable tread. So 14/40 = .35/32's per 1000 miles, or about 3000 miles per 32nd. At this rate, I should have about 12K - 18Kmiles left to the wear indicators

I know, I know, I didn't rotate them enough. But they have been wearing very evenly, no spots, cups or anything. They track dead on, don't pull and have never had to have them rebalanced.

Soooooo, I might get about 50K miles out of them, mostly highway/pavement.

Is this reasonable?

Depends on how you drive, brake, road conditions, how often you rotate, etc. I would say no, but then I can get 100 to 140,000 out of a set of BFG all terrain's and those will carry a higher price tag and I rotate every 10 to 12,000 miles. All I've ever had on my trucks are BFG's!

In my experience with 2wd vehicles and moderate use, decent tires last me 55,000 - 70,000 miles with proper inflation and rotation every 5,000 - 10,000. The high end of the range is for more costly tires, like the Michelins I've got on my truck now (Cross Terrain SUVs, 265/70/16. They have 68,000 and are just about done).

I put a cheap set of Kumhos on my wife's Suzuki Grand Vitara, and they did not even get to 40,000 miles. I was pretty annoyed about that.

Using your figures, you could get to almost 58,000 miles. I would call that normal.

I had a set of BFG's on my 84 Toyota 4 wheeler. Got 81K miles with a belt starting to show.

What do you do to get 100K + ??? That is beyond belief (no offense).

No offense taken waterman, I know it's hard to beleive. Regular rotation is all I do. Some say BFG'S are some of the hardest rubbers out on the road today! The set on my '05 have 90,000 on them now (except for 1 which had a railroad spike go through it and couldnt be saved) and will probably go another 40,000 or so! Not sure of the tread depth, will have to measure and get back to ya.

I would say that is average tire wear considering tires that have a reputation for lasting a really long time (Michelin LTX M/S come to mind) usually go 65,000 miles or longer depending on how you drive, how you rotate, maintaining correct air pressure, correct wheel alignment, etc.

It hasn't been that long ago when tires rarely went over 30,000 miles before being completely "used up". They've come a long way with the different rubber compounds they use now days.
