Power Loss factor

I was just wondering if any you guys know what the power loss factor is when going from the stock tires to a 33 or a 35. I would like to go 35's but do not want to re-gear. If i add a tuner, FIPK, and mandrel bent exhaust, will this offset the butt dyno when moving to 35's? Anyone out there add the tires first, and then add the power adders or did everyone add the tires and stuff later? I just do not want to be out on I-20 and have the truck shifting in and out of overdrive when going up hills.

well first off what engine do you have? a 5.4 can handle the 35's but there will be a loss of power! you can make some of this power with simple bolt ons... CAI, high flowing exhaust, programer (xcal 3, or edge). but for the price of all that you could most likely spend alittle extra and regear and be very happy. rule of thumb anything over 33's you should regear.

I have the 5.4. That sounds about like what I thought. The last truck I had i re-geared to 4.10's because I went to 37's. Just wasn't sure what the 5.4 felt like with anything bigger than the 33's.

Thanks for the reply.

33's match up great with a 5.4 engine and 3.73 gears. I'm running 35's now and even with a programmer the truck still feel's sluggish. Lucky I don't have any hill's around here or I'd really be screwed. In fact I'm looking to put my 33's back on in the near future to re-gain some performance and gas mileage. If I didn't have to make a 100 mile an day round trip to work I would leave the 35's on.

A lot of how much performance you lose depends on your powertrain.

Good to know, thats what i was looking for. I just don't want to have to re-gear if its not necessary. I can make all of the other changes one piece at a time so i don't have the huge hit at once in the wallet. The gears though plus install are a lot to take at once for me. Thanks for the reply though.

RGV, I think you will be ok unless you do a lot of heavy towing/hauling.

Thanks wandell, i might tow a car like once a month maybe, but nothing on a daily basis. I'm thinking of getting an edge for their tow level to counter it. would this be a smart move? thanks.

That would be a good upgrade, but lower gears would be better.
