speedometer recalibration

ok, all. i have an 03 5.4L F150. how exactly is the speedometer recalibrated? i have read different posts regarding this. some say that it is recalibrated based on the tire's revs. per mile the least being you can recalibrate to being 601, however, others said that there are only 4 or 5 tire sizes that you can recalibrate to. the tires i have selected are the bfg at's k/o 315-70-17, and the revs per mile is 601. how much would a dealer charge to perform this, if it is possible? i want the change to be exact, and not have the disaccuracy merely reduced. Lastly, i have a buddy w/ a superchips programmer. would it be possible to use it to recalibrate the speedo, and would the change stay valid after pulling the handheld out? i am trying to avoid buying a canned handheld, and am opting for custom tuning, and i don't have the funds to go that route yet. also, will the odometer be off if i cannot recalibrate the speedometer? help!

The Superchips and other tuners "marry" themselves to the truck they are programming. If you use his, it won't work unless he returned his truck to it's stock settings. This is so a couple of buddies can't buy a tuner and use it on several different trucks.

I would just spend the dough on a tuner. I bought the hypertech a few years ago and its great. You can get the extra power from your truck plus down the road if you wanted to change your tire size again, you can recalibrate with no hassle.

Do these tuners effect warranty coverage?

That is a loaded question. They should not, but some dealers seem to be looking for a reason to cause you problems. Ask your dealer. If he lies to you and says it will void your warranty you might as well start looking for a new dealer.

I've heard some places like Autozone or Pepboys might do it or do they only do code reading?
