Front Brake Job...
Front Brake Job...
Hey guys,
I tried the search function and only really found people suggesting different pads.
I am getting ready to do the front brakes on my 2005 F-150 2wd. I heard somewhere that there are extra parts I will need to buy besides the usual pads/turning rotors. Does anyone care to help out.
Thanks in advance, and I appologize if this topic has been covered a thousand times. Like I said, when I searched I came up with everyones opinions on pads. Maybe I searched the wrong word.

The rotors have the bearings sealed in them. Its hard to just turn the rotor from what i think i remember reading. I think its possible, but no easy to do. I think it has to be turned while its still on the truck
I just went and bought new CarQuest pads yesterday and they came with a little packet of metal bits. Maybe those are the pieces?
And no, I'm not replacing the brakes by myself.

Anyone else help a brother out, remember that it is on an 05' 2wd fronts.
Thanks again,

I had the TSB done on my 05 2x4. It included larger rotors and calipers with pads, so make sure you get the right size. I believe there is a fiber locking nut that gets replaced, it holds down the rotor/bearing assembly. The dealer listed this work at $1200, so do it yourself.

I can't remember, it was for the frt rotors and brake pad pre-mature wearing for 04 and early 05s. You had to have damage and get it done before 12,000miles if I remember right. I found out about from this site.

I have an 05, changed my pads long ago to get rid of the dust. It is no big deal. Just your typical pad replacement. I have never been one to turn rotors and sure won't with these that have to be turned while on the truck. I changed my pads at 11,000 miles, then at 45,000, had a front bearing go out, so changed the rotors then, kept same pads. Never had a noise or problem. There are instructions if you do a search on how to change pads. All you need is a wrench, 11 mm, I think.

Yeah, I know how to change the pads, I just was wondering about taking off the rotors to have them turned. I need to turn mine, if not replace them even. I bought my truck used and it looks like whoever owned it before me just changed pads and never machined the rotors.
You said that you changed your rotors when a bearing went out. What was the process to changet the rotor. That would answer my original question. Somebody told me if you dont have them turned while on the truck, that you have to buy some new parts just to turn the rotors.
Thanks in advance, and thanks to all that have chimed in so far.

you sure its metric blue. I think its like 1 1/4" or something *could be totally off*
anyways ive turned my front rotors twice now and am on my second set of pads. Rotors have specifications on how far is to far with them (minimum thickness)
Always use new cotter pins on anything you take one out of
Also turning the rotors on car is faster and more accurate. incase the spindle or bearings are slightly out of round or balance, it will be compensated for on the rotors.

I figured it out guys. The difference is that the bearings are pressed into the rotors on the 04+ fronts. This doesnt allow you to use a tradition lathe for machining the rotors. Thats why we have to have them resurfaced on the vehicle or replace the rotors.
Thanks again for all the help and I hope this might have helped someone else out for future ref.
Thanks,
