Shop won't put tires on!
Ok so I go to Discount Tire today to get some Nitto Terra Grappler's 285/70/17 to put on my 2000 4x4 Extended Cab. The salesman and I walk out to the parking lot to look at my truck and after me telling him I was keeping the stock wheels (17in sawblades) he informed me that I would have to buy new rims if I wanted the tires. He said they cannot fit that size tire on my stock rim. Then he added that there is a liability issue and it would be unsafe for me to operate the vehicle with that wheel tire combo. Then he quickly tried to sell me some new rims. Needless to say I walked out.
Now I have seen plenty of you folks on here with a 285 or 295 70/17 setup on stock rims. Did any of you run into the same problem I did? Is it really unsafe? Should I just mail order and find a shop that will install them? Any comments would be appreciated.

im pretty sure the stock rim is 7.5" wide so if you look up 285/70/17 on the chart it works for that rim with. dont know why they wont put them on

There are some shops who wont mount any tire on rims that are outside of the tire manufacturer's recommended rim width. Or other shops, that wont mount tires other then the stock sizes. In today's suit crazy world, some take liabilities too far.
Is this size unsafe on a stock rim, doubt it, especially since it's only a half inch under the recommended rim size.
Visit a few of your local small tire shops, and you wont run into this sort of problem. Remember they typically wont offer as good a price, but they do make up for this difference in service.

I had this problem when I bought rims off of the internet. I took my rims to Kaufman Tire (Norcross, GA) because they were having a sale on 33's and they said that cannot mount the tires for me because they do not want to be responsible for damaging my wheels. I told them that they just lost a $800 sale and to go ******* themselves. I found a small mom and pop shop that mounted and balanced them for $40....
If someone wants your money, they will do it. I would call Discount Tire up and give them the third degree or (better yet) since they wasted your time, go back up there and act like you want to buy some wheels..make them jump through hoops offering you deals...then walk out. I apologize for the "book", I just feel strongly that customer service is priority #1.
