Scary Noise! Help
I get a nasty grinding noise from my front DS wheel area when i am moving and turn the wheel left. There is no clearence problems and nothing is hitting or rubbing that I can see from under it.
Any ideas?

Get the wheel in the air and shake it with one hand on the top and one hand on the bottom. Next shake it again with one hand on the left side and one on the right. You are looking for excessive play one way or the other. Let us know the results. Also spin the wheel and listen for any noise. After checking all that, pull the wheel off and do a visual inspection. Tell us all the details and take pics if you can.
I had that prob once , it was a loud grinding like you describe . It was hard to locate until I jacked it up 3' in the air and took the front tire off stuck my head underneath the rotor and spun it slow.
It was that freakin stainless vibration clip for the brakes . I was running stock rotors at the time and they were coming in contact with that clip - it sounded like a bad bearing , I grinded that clip down a bit and reinstalled - quiet again.

jacked it up
and didn't like what I found. wheel tight with rotor. wheel still has tons of slop. up down, side to side, every way.

They're a little pricey, and prolly rusted on with NY winters. Be sure the half shaft is freed up before you start banging on it with a big hammer (4x4). And if there's a lot of play in it, as stated, look real close at the ball joints/tie rods.

It was the bearings and the bearing ***'y was seized to everything. rotor and spindle. Sooooo... I soaked it with WD40 and a little BFH action got 'er loose.

it was easiest to re insert the 3 bolts holding the bearing ***'y to the spindle minus a few threads and bang them from behind to push the whole unit loose. As long as you're in there replace the pads and rotors and start from scratch.
