If you have a 4x4, you can fit 315/70-17's (35x12.50). If you have a 4x2, I'd stick with a 305/65-17 (33x12.50).
Backspacing is simply a measurement, it's not an automotive part. It's the distance from the mounting surface of the wheel (where it bolts to the hub) to the rear edge of the wheel. Your OEM wheels are 17x7.5 inches wide and they have 5.5 inches of backspacing.

Ok so this will affect how far the wheel goes in to the wheel well an how far it sticks out from the flair.... so when buying rims how much backspacing shoud one have?

Exactly. However, keep in mind wheel width and backspacing are as important to tire fitment as tire size. So, if you go to a wider aftermarket wheel, that changes what size tire you can fit. If you go with an aftermarket wheel, you will have to go with a slightly smaller tire unless the new wheel is identical to the OEM specs (7.5 inches wide with 5.5 inches of backspacing).
Also, you never said if you have a 4x4 or 4x2.

I'd suggest going with a 325/60-18 (33x13.00) tire with an 18x9 inch wheel with 5 to 6 inches of backspacing, depending on how far you want the tire/wheel to stick out. A 9 inch wide wheel with 6 inches of backspacing will stick out an inch farther than your OEM wheels, 5.5 inches of backspacing will stick out 1.5 inches farther and 5 inches will stick out 2 inches farther. This is a great looking combo on a 4x4 with a leveling kit and the 325/60-18 is a common tire size.

Question Can I jump in here with a question?

I have a 4x4, and I plan to install either a 2" or 2.5" leveling kit, and possible a 3" block on the rear. I have the stock 20" wheels. Can I put a 35/60/R20 Toyo TOYO Open Country MT 35X12.50R20 121Q E10 or a TOYO Open Country MT 33X12.50R20 114Q E10 w/o causing rubbing? I believe that the stock rim is 8.5" in width. I think the backspacing is approx. 6"

Quickie

Got a bone stock 98 150, 4.6L with OEM 17's. Currently has 265/70's on it. I wanna go bigger. How big can I get away with with out rubs. I don't mind tires sticking out at all.

Without any rubbing at all, a 305/65-17 (33x12.50)

Thanks! What tire do you recomend? Looking for something aggressive, but still good for the street. Won't kill the gas milage and wear out after 20,000.

I am gonna keep the stock rims for a bit longer, due to lack of total funding.

What do you think of these in 22, wrapped in Nitto 420's in 305/40R22
