Help with rim size/backspacing

O.K. I know next to nothing on size/backspacing of rims. However, in the (hopefully) near future, I plan on getting some aftermarket rims for my truck('05 4X4 w/2.5" spacer). Right now, I have the stock rims with 265/70/17 tires. I plan on going to at least 285/70/17 (probably what I will end up with). My question is this: what width/backspacing would work with the 285's with the option of going to 305's? I'm assuming that a rim that would cover that range probably would not be a good choice to mount my current tires on, so I would have to upgrade tires/rims at the same time.

Any help appreciated. I don't know what brand, etc. I'm looking for yet, but wanted to know the basic measurements to look for first. Thanks again.

If you want to run 285/70-17's (33x11.50) or 305/65-17's (33x12.50) you have a ton of options. You could run anything from your OEM wheels, which are 17x7.5 inches (with 5.5 inches of backspacing) to a 10 inch wide wheel. I'd try to stay close to the OEM backspacing of 5.5 inches. I'd suggest considering a 325/60-18 (33x13.00) tire on an 18x9 inch wheel personally. I think this is a great looking combo on a 4x4 with a leveling kit.

Thanks Wandell. Now I have something to go on when I shop. I personally like a "beefier" (wider) tire. My tires I have now just look too skinny for me. Also, I will probably be going with the BF Goodrich AT/KO (285)or maybe the Nitto Terra Grapplers(295/305 if they make them in 305). So would an 8.5 wide tire be a good middle ground, or would I be better off with a 9 (with close to stock backspacing)?

Edit: Sorry, just read your reply again where you suggested the 9" wheel.

Most tire manufacturers recommend an 8 to 9 inch wide wheel for 285's and an 8 to 10 inch wide wheel for 295 and 305mm wide tires.

Yeah, an 8.5 inch wide wheel should be fine for up to a 325mm wide tire.

305/65/17 (33x12.5").... It's the way to go...trust me. I would have gotten them if I had known they had made them at the time I had bought the 285's. You can't go wrong with this size. It's perfect.
