rotor questions???
rotor questions???
I have been wanting to upgrade my rotors on my 2001 supercrew 4x4 but I'm not for sure which way to go. I've heard good things and bad things about both the slotted and cross drilled rotors. Does anyone have any suggestions. All help will be appreciated.
I run Brembo non-slotted, non-drilled, these days.
I used cross-drilled rotors for several years (PowerStop, AP & Quickstop), but noticed that pad life was not very good - I only got about 10K miles on a set of fronts. Whether or not this rapid wear is attributable to my driving style or the rotors is unknown, though.
At any rate, I got some cracks on the cross-drilled hole on my last set of rotors (Quickstops), so I figure I'd try something new.
As a side note, I never got any cracks on the APs or the PowerStops, the Quickstops were sorta cheap so the quality may not have been there.
I haven't had these "regular" Brembos on long enough to tell if my pad wear is any better, but I do notice a little less dust so I"m hoping for the best.

I'm doing brakes now. I didn't get many miles out of my last SBS pads and Powerslot slotted rotors. Maybe 20,000 miles. Pads and rotors were shot. Metal to metal.
I bought new Powerslot slotted rotors again and EBC Greenstuff pads. If I get poor wear on the rotors again I'm gonna go back to the solid ones.

Can you tell any difference in the stopping power of the slotted or cross drilled rotors? If so, is it enough difference to justify the price you have to pay for the slotted or cross drilled compared to the factory solid? I want to thank ya'll for your help.
I've gone to replacing (when they're ready) my factory rotors with Brembo stock replacements with no slots or holes. They hold up MUCH better than the stockers and I just can't seem to justify the slightly better braking against the more frequent replacement of both pads and rotors that my friends with the higher priced stuff are going through.

I've run Hawk HPS pads no matter what rotor I use. These contribute greatly to good pedal feel and stopping power.
I dont know how many guys want to hear this, but it seems to me that with rotors so cheap( aftermarket standard rotors)...I bought my last set for $28 each!...............that I just replace everything every brake job....
I have done this twice on my 02 ford..previously I had a 97 f-150 and spent a ton of money buying factory rotors and them once, these fancy rotors for over $100 each....but the pads ruin them all!!!!
Id consider stainless cast rotors maybe..because they are not all rusted up, when its time for a brake job.
are they selling stainless rotors, and if so are they priced decent enough....because I dont drive 100 mph then need to stop in 60 feet......and with anti lock brakes I wonder if you could even tell the top of the line stuff braking from the run of the mill on the street!
I think if you are tryi8ng to make the truck look as hot as possible, then the cross drilled slotted stuff may be worth your while....especially if they come painted or in stainless.
so the last front end brake job cost me less than $100......dealer wanted $500
let me know if I am way out of line........I have so much more to spend on my truck......

My father once told me that "When you buy a cheap tool, all you get is a cheap tool." (My father was a pretty smart guy.)
When it comes to things like brakes, I don't buy cheap tools. There's too much riding on that decsision. I've got Brembo's with Porterfields.

you know 3 brake jobs at about 30 K miles each seems to tell me the were inexpesive parts...not CHEAP parts.
hey if its a piece of crap I aint about to stand there and say different...i am driving a ford F150 super cab XLT FX4 LONG BED!!!!! NOT a cheap truck....it aint a dodge dakota !!!!!!!!!!!!
you know the worst rotors were the ones i used with the LIFETIME pads. that cost me like $60 a set.....yeah they last forever, but everything else dies early!!!!!
I am a tool and die maker..I certainly understand your fathers message..I make my living with tools
