tire size question, please help.
tire size question, please help.
i've got 255/70R16 all terrains on my stock height regular cab flare side... it looks okay, but i will be putting a 3.5" spindle lift in the front and a 3" block lift in the back. i'm pretty happy with the performance of my truck as it is now (according to the g-tech, it runs 16.5's with three people in it, including my fat ***)
i have the 3.55 rear end, what would be a good size tire to go to that wouldn't effect my performance too bad... i'm thinking of going mud terrain. . thanks for the help, how good do you think this setup would look, any suggestions?
(i've got the '98 v6 with the manual tranny)
thanks for the help..

IMO, if you're goin with a 3" lift all around, anything less than 33" tires would look silly regardless of performance. Are you keeping the stock rims, going to wider rims, etc? I'd put 33's or 35's on it, but depending on your rim width, depends on the width of your tire. Anywhere from 11.5's to 12.5's (285 vs. 305's in 33's). I'm not familiar enough with a 6 cyl to tell you about performance, but anytime you r go to bigger tires, your performance is going to drop unless you re-gear. FYI, are'nt ford 6 cyl. straight 6's not V6's?
i'm gonna go with the the stock rims, i don't know how wide they are, they're the ones that have 3 spokes that split at the end, the alimunium ones from the 98 xlt models... 33's don't sound too bad... ae there any good 33's that will fit the stock rims? i might end up only doing a 2" in the back.
and no, my generation was when they started the v6.

Since you have a V6 you may want to consider sticking with a 32 inch tire like a 265/75-16 (32x10.50) but a 285/75-16 (33x11.50) will fit your wheels and truck just fine with the lift. Also, the stock wheels are 16x7.

would the 32's and/or 33's fit the wheel wells good with a 3 inch (not 3.5) spindle/block lift? what about a 2" spring/block lift? i may have to go that root due to money...
thanks alot for the help! how cheap can i get 3 inch spindles?
11.5 refers to the width of the tire.
After you do your lift, 2.5-3 would be pretty close to a stock 4x4.
I run 265/75R16s (32" diameter) on mine and its stock height, so imagine that on your truck, check out my gallery for pics.
Personally I want to move up to 285s.

yeah, those look a little small.... would 33" mud terrain look a lot meaner, would the rear end/engine handle it? it doesn't look that much bigger than the tires i have now.

okay, i'm having a hard time understanding all of this tire stuff... i haven't had much explanation. my friend's dad was saying something about rule of 10's or something like that, i dunno....
so a 285/75 r16 would fit my stock 16x7 inch rims well, and they're 33's?
my friend has 325/65/15 i think... and he says they're 31's... how does that work, i'm so confused...
and the 265/75/16 are 32's... is that really much of a difference? would effect acceleration that much?
how many inches are my 255/70 r16's?
please help.

The first number is the width in mm. The second number is the proportion of the width to the sidewall height.
285/75R16s will fit the stock wheels and fit your truck (after the lift), and yes they are about 33" tall (but every manufacturer is a little different in reality).
255/70R16s are in the neighborhood of 31" tall.
Moving the tire diameter up by a few inches can cause some performance decrease. Some options are getting a chip/programmer, re-gearing, engine swap, etc.
You will need to correct your speedo, it will read slow. I think '98 still used the VSS gear on the tranny, which in theory is simple. But I still cant find the damn thing on my truck

If I am not mistaken I believe that a 35 would be around the neighbor hood of 315/75/16. I would personally advise you to go with 285/75/16 I had the exact set up on my old f150. It was just like yours only a v8. I don't think the 35's would fit well. My old truck looked killer with the 285's. Turned a lot of heads. I sold it for the truck i have now which is a 97 F150 with 38's!!! Good Luck!
yeah, i'm gonna go with the 285's... does anyone have past experience of these tires on their v6? how bad was the acceleration robbed? if so, what exact kind of v6. (transmission, trim, etc...) Thanks alot!
DUDE, I'D GO WITH 305/75/16. IT'S LIKE A 33", BUT A LITTLE LESS RUBBER (BECAUSE YOU HAVE MORE RIM/WHEEL). I'D ALSO GET THE NITTO MUD GRAPPLER TIRES FOR " MUDDIN' "! THEY ARE SUPER BEEFY LOOKING AND REASONABLY PRICED TOO. AS FOR YOUR ENGINE, YOU'LL PROBEBLY NEED TO REGEAR. THE BIGGER TIRES WITH THE V-6, WILL HAVE A MAJOR
IMPACT!!! IF YOU GO FOR THE 285/75/16 (WHICH IS ALMOST A 31"), YOU'LL BE ABLE TO DO WITHOUT REGEARING. HOWEVER, YOUR OVERALL TORQUE WILL GO DOWN AND IT WILL DRIVE AT A LOWER RPM ON THE FREEWAY. AS FOR ACCELERATION, YOU WONT NOTICE A BIG DIFFERANCE.

IF YOU'RE ACTUALLY USING YOUR TRUCK FOR OFF ROADING... THE BLOCKS WILL NOT HOLD UP, AND YOU'LL CAUSE MAJOR DAMAGE TO YOUR TRUCK! GET A DEAVER SPRING PACK, I THINK THE SMALLIEST LIFT THEY MAKE IS A 3''.
