How long before changing stock brake pads?

Before I go have them checked out tomorrow, what kind of wear should I be expecting on my brakes? 2002 Supercrew with 30,000 miles.

I had to have my fronts done at 32,000 on my 02 screw 4x4 much to my disbelief. I was told by the local ford dealer at 25,000 that the fronts were shot, and the rears were not far behind.

I am at 38k and change and am trying to find the time to have the rears done. I got a look at them a few weeks ago when I had the new tires put on (BFG all terrains. I stayed w/265/70/17).

A word of caution, do not go to Midas! I made the mistake of having the fronts done there, with their lifetime pads. 2,000 miles later I was buying rotors.

Just be careful who you have do the job. I may go ceramic on the rear?

On my 1999, 45K on the front, and 85K on the rear. Have 90K now and the front will need it soon.

I have an '03 Scab and it's got 19K on it and I'm starting to get a little squell out of the drivers front...the caliper has turned blue and it looks like the rotor has glazed from the heat..thinking about going power slot rotors with EBC pads up front

I just did the fronts on my 2001 supercab. It has 45,000. The rears look to have about 30% left. I will probably do those shortly to get it done.

I bought MotorCraft pads from the dealer for $50. I've driven almost 3000 miles since the change and can say they are quiet, very little dust and stop the truck well. I will buy the Motorcraft whne I do the rears also.

No flames intended, but methinks you guys are a little hard on your brakes. 81,000 miles on my '01 Screw and all original!

edit: We're talking brakes here. We won't mention the rear axle whine or the small radiator exchange fiasco.

'02 S'crew

I had front brakes replaced @ 43000 miles & again @ 68000 miles. I had to do the rears @ 68000, along with front rotors. Only ran $435 for the last brake job. I felt 68000 miles was pretty good on the rear. I pull my S'crew behind my motor home, and use a "Brake Buddy" which activates the brakes on the pickup when being pulled. The miles don't register when being towed, so there is approx. 15000 miles not showing.

One thing I ***can*** say for sure.........

Don't bother having your rotors turned if you're turning them because they're even a little bit warped.

If you're turning them to simply resurface, fine, but if they're warped at all, just toss 'em & buy new rotors!! You will thank me later!!!

I've had it with modern rotors. They DO NOT handle the heat like old stuff. I've done waaaay too many front brakes in the last 10 years to see a repeating trend & it sucks!!

I did my fronts about 6 months ago at 60Kmiles and had to just do them again at 72Kmiles because the freakin' rotors just warped again in no-time. And, if possible, use OEM rotors and OEM pads. That's about as good as you're gonna get!!

I see so many people here with brake problems. Whats going on here?

At 65K miles I changed out the front pads only for peace of mind. In comparision between the old and new pads, the old pads looked just a bit more than half worn.

I looked at the rear brakes, now at 92K miles, and they are ready to be changed. I'll be doing them soon.

Unhappy

40,000 miles and changed the brakes all the way round. I had the brakes done earlier in the year at Micheal Tire and the front right rotor came off and was slaming into my rim. They fixed it and bought me a new rim. The repair was was sub-satisfactory. I ended up doing the fronts myself and the rear was about 30% left so I just changed them to. I had lots of fun removing the rear rotors. Now I have a grinding noise from both rear wheels (new rotors and pads). Is this normal? I am guessing they just need to break themselves in. Please advise.

I need to clarifymy last posting. The rotor did not come off it was the caliper. The moron must not have tightened to caliper and it came off. I far as the noise from the rear of the truck. The parking brake pads broke when I was removing the rotor and was replaced. I backed off the parking brake proir to removal. I will try to play with the parking brake adjustment and see if that works. Thanks
By the way. Another member had a great idea for removing rotors with a circular saw and a metal blade and it seems to be working quite well for folks

fwiw, there are faaaar better rotors than stock out there... I used to run the Powerslot rotors on my '94 Cobra, lasted a looooong time AND they don't rust....

Mine were all done at 85,000k...The lariat has all wheel disk brakes and they are just great...

I was told the ford pads that they have used the passed 3 years app. have been very hard wearing on the rotors...The wear has been much higher with these pads...But that's the only type ford uses now...My dealers warranty man told me this...Many years ago I did a Foundation for his father and I know I can believe him...
