Post 305/70-16 question?

I've finally decided on a tire for my truck. I know it fits the stock 16" rim, but does it fit in the well? has anyone put this size on their truck, the tire height is the same as the 285/75-16 only they are an 1" wider, I just want to be sure that they wont rub when I turn. Thanks for any input.

Hello!! I just had 285/75/16 BFG's put on my 97 150. Shop was worried it would be tight. Ended up with 3/4" to spare from plastic lower part of front bumper. BUT, the whole issue really depends on the offset of your wheels. I have american racing pythons. They are pretty neautral and the extra width (had the 265-17's) went towards the fender not much to towards the frame. Shop thought the stock off-road package helped. FYI- We did alot of measuring and holding the wheel on the lugs to make sure of a fit. Especially since you own the wheels once they are mounted!!! Good luck!

Although they aren't the stock wheels, I have had no trouble with my 305's. When they were first installed I had to trim the inside of the stock mud gaurds and bend them back a little but now they don't rub at all - ever!

I can't even tell that some of the plastic was shaved from the inside of the flap (don't know how I ever lived without my Dremel) and bending it back made it look like it was were it belonged in the first place. If you want, I can measure the off- set of my 16x8 AR Bajas and let you know.

Whatever you decide, the 305's look awesome on the truck. Stick 'em under there if you can. Good luck!

kkirt,
Thanks for the info, if you could give me the backset of the rim it would be great. If you have a picture I would love to see it. Thanks Gino

I have had the 305/70/16's on my truck for 6 months. I have aftermarket wheels that are 16x8 with supposedly the same backspacing as stock. I have not done any trimming whatsoever. I still have about an inch of clearance at the closest spot. And they are still within the wheel well. Good Luck!

I thought About getting those. But decided ( I think ) to get the BFG 295/75/16's once I get the wheels for X-mas, and then a body lift. I wanted the extra 1/2" taller

Hey "Loser"!!! Great minds think alike!!

Seriously, no other mods yet. But I must agree I am happy with setup. Surprised the tires ride as nice as they do. I am actually going for the monochrome look since I have a well maintained polished 150. Problem is finding a descent rear black bumper. (No use getting a front overlay with back chrome)

BUT next prject is getting rid of my 17"s. Great wheels, just not the look I want now.

HEY!! just bolted on a set of 16 by 10 atlas
rims by american racing i put 285/75/16 "S on
them and i have no clearence problems at all
my wheels have a 5 inch backspacing and they
stick out about a inch past the body awsome
look! it is at the stock ride height but i
plan on lifting the truck later on! but this
wheel and tire combo will work and still has
plenty of fenderwell to tire clearance with
the factory ride height. i kept the wheel
backspacing in the same range as factory rims
because when you change it you will cause
premature wear on bearings and suspension
components! so this is very important to mantain the same amount of backspacing as
factory GOOD LUCK!!!!!!
KEEP ON TRUCKIN!

Gino-
Are you sure they'll fit on your stock rims? My '97 Expedition came with 16x7 wheels and the 285/75R16s barely fit. Adding an inch in width will be pushing the limits. I finally bought some 16x8 rims. The tires look, ride and handle much better.

Also, look closely at the wheel under the center cap for a small number stamped between the lug holes. This is the offset. My factory rims were +12mm I think. The new rims are +14mm??

Neal,
The rims are the stock 16x7, but I checked the offset when you said it and mine was 14mm, I had no idea that they would make different rims, I'm glad I lucked out.

Sorry I didn't get back with you sooner!

I didn't take my wheels off to measure the backspacing but I did take some measurements. I think they will get you close. It is 3 1/2" from the the outer edge of the wheel to the inner most point on the hub (where the lug nuts seat.)

Since my wheels are 8" wide I would say if you measure the same distance on the stock rims less an inch for the diferrence in rim sizes and you come close you should be ok. I know, its not very scientific but hell, i'm not a scientist!

Good luck with the new combo. I think you will love 'em. I do!
