Continental Contitrac tires

Does anyone have any long time experience with the Continental Contitrac tire?

The Continentals on my 2004 STX have 7200 miles on them. I've always made it a habit to check tire pressure at least once per week. Rotate tires every 6000 miles.

The unusual amount of tire ware and odd looking uneven ware on only one tire has me a little concerned. Especially, after all of the holibalu with the Bridgestone/Firestone a while back.

The Continental Contitrac is a pretty cheep tire and I'm not sure how much can be expect from it.

I don't have any, but the guy across the street got some a few months (6 or 8) ago on his Toyota Tundra, and they already look terrible, lost a lot of tread off of the front tires.

Unhappy ContiTrac Tires

I;ve been putting ContiTrac tires on my Chevy Silverado for several years. I thought I was doing ok, but I've noticed that although I'm not perfect about air pressure, I try to keep up with it. They don't wear well, they do tend to scallop and that in turn affects my ride, my A frame, and the pivot arms.

It is my understanding that trucks are hard on tires, and 4WD is also demanding, as is plowing (I do my driveway and sometimes friend's driveways). However, I am really beginning to feel that ContiTracs are not the way for me to go.

Additionally, I had planned on putting 2 tires on the front, moving the front to back and pulling one of the back off to replace the rather bald spare. When I got to the <NAME WITHHELD> shop they informed me that they didn't have a pair of Conti's, probably because they are discontinuing them, and the wouldn't put just 2 of a different tire on the front because apparently (I didn't know this, does it sound right to you) unmatched tires resulted in their company replacing someone's transfer case.

I suppose that's possible, although I kind of feel like it may also be a way for them to make more money. I left, and I'm looking for a better tire than the ContiTrac (E series). Anyone have any ideas?

Thanx,

Sparklinrose

continental tires

just bought new f150 crew cab with conti tires and don't know anything about them. However (I had a 99 and 02 F150 supercabs and switched to Dayton Timberline ATs. Agreat tire highly recommended by a Consumer Reports article. Very affordable thru Tires Plus here in FL. About 3 years ago bought 265x60x16s for about $550 out the door.. Wear great and good rain tire. Made Ford transfer them from 99 to 2002 when I traded.
Highly recommend these tires.

I've had them on my 91 Chevy, 235/75/15 for the last 4 years, they have about 60K on them. I'm been very happy with them. I would give them a for 2WD ONLY. I don' think they would make a very good 4WD tire. They are biased more towards all season comfort. They are the OEM on the Lincoln Navigator & the MB M-Series.

A link you might find useful, note the ratings at the bottom:

Ther're not the best tire I've ever used but I couldn't pass up the deal I got. I paid $200 including shipping for 5 tires when the Tire Rack had a sale 4.5 years ago.

KC-10 FE out...

Contis

My wife's 2003 Ford Escape Limited came with on OE set of Contitracs. The tires were junk. Super loud on the road , you would not think they would be loud looking at the tread pattern. The tires also rode very hard, even at the 30psi recommended by Ford. The tires were just plain dangerous when the roads got wet. Hydroplaning was the norm and resulted in involuntary lane changes. I went to a local Discount Tire store with 7000 miles on the tires and traded them in for a set of Michelin Cross Terrain SUV's. Now my wife is not a car nut and to her a vehicle is just a way to get from one place to another, but as soon as she drove on the Michelins she noticed a huge difference. The Michelins were whisper quiet, rode alot softer and just plain handle better in all weather and types of driving. I think almost any tire is an upgrade from the Contis, except the Goodyear Wrangler RT/S, but that is another story...

I'd have to agree that these tires are no good.. they would maybe be alright for like a small pickup or small suv(though according to the post right before this they dont seem to even be good for that), but for a fullsized truck they don't seem to hold up to great, i'd get them replaced with any tire rated in the top 5 @ tirerack.com

I had them on my Escape and they were horribly loud and replaced them with Dayton Timberline AT II. The Continentals were starting to look like the tread was going to separate. Never noticed till a friend pointed it out to me. I won't used a continental tire ever again.
