Question Youngin' needs help on new tires

This is my first truck I've had to buy new tires for. I have 70k on my factory tires, and I am needin some new ones. Being a college student and strapped for cash, I was wondering what the best bang for the buck would be? I have the 16" rims ( I believe the 17" are offered only on 4WD in '99 ). Would going with a taller or wider tire make any difference and/or advantage?

I am clueless about tires, so I apologize for such a mundane question. Thanks in advance.

Cool

55,

Standard, low profile, wide...depends what you are trying to gain. Looks, handling, on road, off road, cheap?

Perhaps I'm being too indecisive. To rephrase, I guess I am just curious if there are types I should focus on... any to stay away from.

If I am correct, they are an aggressive, off road type tire. I fyou want performance, go with a pirelli, toyo, or yokohama low profile, high speed rated tire. Depends what you are trying to accomplish.

ChuckM,

Thanks for the link! My truck actually came with General's when I bought it new. They've lasted close to 75k miles thus far.

Thanks again.

mudder,

I am suprised they've lasted this long myself. I moved here from Arlington TX and bought the truck at the Ford dealership near the Ballpark right off 360. What did you end up replacing your tires with?

55,

I know you said that you are on a budget...what is it. I bought my Pirelli's from the tirerack.com for $92.00 each. They are an awesome dual purpose tire...good wet/dry traction, good off pavement(not "off-road"). Not great for either, but I live in the northeast so I couldn't by a true performance tire. If I had to do it again and wanted to spend an extra $250, I would get the Toyo Proxes...great performance tire that can be used in cold weather.

That's cool, I know the dealer you are talking about. When I replaced my Generals on my last truck, I went to Michelin MS LTX 245/75/16's. They were good tires for a 2wd, but 4x4's should have AT's.

jjboods,

That's a good question. I obviously can't afford to spend too much. I have that tendancy to spend more then I should, and when the bills come in I kick my own *** for it.

I am thinking of getting street tires, since I spend 95% of the time on the interstate, but I would like to get something a little more aesthetic then what I have now. How much per tire ( or set, if that's how you buy them ) are people spending? ( ie your $92/tire.. is that above average price per? )

mudder: thanks for the info. I hear a lot about the Michelin's, and will be adding them to my research list.

This might be out of reach for me, but I was wondering...

I've always liked the look of the Lightning. How much would it cost to get the rims and tires for a setup like that?

Truck tires aren't cheap, especially when you are lookin for something a little better than stock. I went with Wilderness AT P255/70/R16. Paid about $100 a tire installed and balanced. They really improved my overall traction but I think I will be going with BFG AT's next time. They just look a little more aggressive. And from several members have posted here, they perform a little better. I just didn't know all that much about tires back then. This site has schooled me a bit. I haven't shopped around too much for street tires, so I can't help you there. My $.02.
