Post 17" Wheels

As I am about to make an offer on a '98 F150 XLT supercab 4x4 with a 4.6L engine and 17" wheels with a 3.55 LS rear can anybody comment on this combination in terms of power/fuel economy? Is it all a good fit? Thanks--Jack.

Mashie,

I've got that exact truck! I can't really complain about the power, except on the highway on rolling hills, it tends to kick into passing gear with the cruise on a little too often. The 4.6 and the 5.4 (from what I've heard) are very similar in fuel economy, so you probably won't gain anything there. The 5.4 does seem to have more problems then the 4.6, but then again, that's just what I've heard, can't speak from personal experience. My last tank cost me $66.00 to fill, (That's at 74.9 cents a litre), and I got just under 600 kms on that. Works out to about 16.3 mpg or so. That is a combination of city/highway driving. I am usually pretty light on the gas pedal.
With the 17 inch wheels, you are fairly limited to your selection in replacement tires. That's really the only downside to these wheels, as far as I'm concerned.
I love this truck, and I'm sure you won't regret buying yours.

jleinweber, thanks for your reply. 74.9 a litre? That's a bargain--it's over 80 cents most places on the island. I know it's going to be expensive to replace rubber and somewhat so to pour gas through it, but what the hell, it is a great truck...
The only complication is that I've got to fly out to Cowtown to pick it up. Hopefully I'll have it in a week or so. Thanks again...

Mashie,

What is so special about it that you have to go to Calgary to pick it up??

How many kms on it, and how much are you offering (if you don't mind me asking).

I just bought mine a few months ago, and paid 21k for it, with 67000 kms.

This truck also has 67K kms, canopy, 6 cd player and remote start. Tow and off road packages. I'm pretty fussy about what I want & can't really find one in BC. He wants $22,800 for it which is in the ballpark when you include all the goodies. Plus, Calgary's a nice place to visit! Westjet can get me out there for about 65 bucks...

Talking

When I bought mine the guy had already installed the Pace Edwards roll top cover, a boxliner, aftermarket hitch with electronic brake module, and a K&N filter. Plus, buying it privately I saved the GST. The truck is very minty, he took really good care of it. He almost cried when I took it from his house, his wife was making him sell it. Sounds like yours will be a pretty sweet deal as well, I know dealers around here are looking for between 25-28000 for these trucks. You'll enjoy it, I sure have!!

Oh yeah, and he also had the aftermarket Ford running boards installed!

Cool

I bought it. Just got to fly out and get it. I met the guy today and he definitely seems like a person who takes care of his things. Finally I can post here as a F150 owner rather as a wannabe! When I had my last F150, 20 years ago, there was no such thing as the internet.
Now I just have to get the damn door cracks fixed!!

Mashie,

I have yet to experience the door crack problem! (Knock on wood) I don't know exactly where they are even supposed to be! I've looked over my doors with a fine tooth comb, and can't find anything wrong!

Actually, I don't even know if this truck has door cracks. I have, however, looked at probably 30 F150's in the past few weeks while looking for trucks and at least 95% of them have the dreaded cracks. If you don't have them, consider yourself lucky. Check the TSB that is available from the door crack thread (right hand column of the home page). There is a preventative fix that Ford will do so you don't get them. My understanding is that Ford will kick in 80% of the cost. From what I gather, if your '97/'98 or '99 F150 doesn't have the cracks, it's only a matter of time...
Good luck. I pick up my new truck on the 26th
