Question how to sync speedometer after installing bigger tires?

After installing 285/75/r16 tires my speedometer and odometer is off. How can I get them back in sync? Is there more than one solution? If so, which way is cheapest and which way is best?

I would like to know the answer to your question too! A local dealer told me they cannot change the settings, even though I am going from stock 255/70/16 to stock 265/70/17. I told them the new wheels and tires are still a stock size, but they said they had no way of calibrating the electronics. I think they are full of crap! Has anybody else had their speedometer calibrated to bigger tires? If so, please help me out. How did they do it, and who did it please?

It depends on the model-year of your truck as to the procedure for recalibrating the speedo.

If you have a '97-'98, then there is a plastic gear in the transmission that you can change. Takes about 5 minutes.

If you have a '99-'01, then the dealer has to recalibrate the speedo with his Ford computer equipment. You'll need to be able to tell him how many revolutions per mile the new tire makes. Some aftermarket computer chips can also recalibrate the speedo, too.

Nomo, et al-
Since I have a '00 with a Superchip, do you if the Superchip automatically recalibrates the speedo?

Automatically- NO, it doesn't.

If you ask Mike (Superchips Distributor), he should be able to help you work out the details of sending the chip back for "custom" programming. However, I think it would be easier & cheaper to just take it to a dealer & have them program the factory ECU. If you go to a dealer, be sure to remove the Superchip beforehand.

Nomo is right. Checked with the dealer, they said it is impossible. Mike from Superchips said they only thing the dealer can do is program my truck to a stock gear ratio. On a '99 4x4 it is either 3.55 or 3.73. Mine has 3.55, and 3.73 is too much. I just bought a flip chip from Mike for $325. It will fix my speedo, do everything else a superchip does, and allow me to choose 87 or 93 octane fuel. Can't wait to get it in!
