Post Cut resistent rock tire

I am looking for a tire (in 35x12.5 16 or 16.5) that can resist the cutting action of shale rock and similar conditions.

I am looking for something maybe 6, but likely 8, or 10 ply, that maintains decent on-road manners (handling, noise, balancing, rain/snow, wear, etc...)

I am considering Super Swamper SSR's, and General Grabber MT's. I would like to have a radial.

Any thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated.

you might want to look at the new goodyear mt/r....supposedly the sidewalls are as bullet-proof as any, and the road manners aren't supposed to be bad either...good luck, Rich..

hikerrich:

Will a 15" wheel fit on a 2001 f-150 SuperCrew? I am just under the impression that a 15" wheel is a tight fit (at best) and involves some grinding of the brake assembly to make it fit.

I have been real impressed with what I have heard about the new MT/R.

15" wheels are not clearing the calipers. IMO I would not grind them.

I am off road a large percentage of the time for my job. I was getting flats, star cuts in the tread from rocks about every 3-4 weeks for several years. My company truck weighs 8500 lb. outfitted. The tire dealer, Les Schwab, suggested Gaints; they weigh about 50% more than a normal 16" truck tire due to added steel. A lot of loggers use them around here. Last week I went for my second set, 35000 miles with no flats! I also tow a 10,000-LB snocat in the winter with the rig off road.

Go with a BFG...I've had them on my truck for almost a year now and have been on plenty of shale and they don't even have a mark on them.

hehe, les schwabb. Rebranded tires.

Coopers and BFGs are about the best tires I have found in the rocks. You cannot go wrong with the BFGs.
