Tire recommendations?
Tire recommendations?
Hi guys,
New user here, and I’m ready for my first set of new tires to replace those god-awful stock Goodyear Wrangler RT/S’s. I’ve narrowed my selections down to the following tires. I want an A/T tire, not A/S or mudders. Can anyone out there personally recommend some tires that they really like? I have a 4x4 w/ 17” rims.
Also, I’m thinking of going to a size in an LT instead of the stock P series. I mainly drive on the highway, with occasional off road use. I use my truck for landscaping on the side, so it carries heavy loads from time to time. Do I need an LT tire, or should I stick with the P series? I only put about 7,000 miles a year on my truck, so treadwear aint a big factor with me, as long as I get more than 25,000 miles out of them.
Here are the tires I’m looking at:
Dayton Timberline A/T. Only available in a 17” rim in this size P265/70R17. No LT’s in 17”.
Bridgestone Dueler A/T Revo. Only available in P series in a 17” rim. No LT. Ouch! It’s really expensive too, but everyone says it’s a killer tire....
Cooper Discoverer A/T. Available in LT265/70R17, no P series in 17”. Local tire shop guy who is a friend swears by his Coopers....
I like the BF Goodrich All-Terrain T/A KO, but it’s waaay out of my price range.
Bridgestone Dueler A/T with UNI-T , available in P265/70R17, but no LT in 17”.
Any ideas on these? Or, does someone have any other recommendations that they really like?
Thanks guys!

I posted this under another thread, but here is what I have to say......
I just recently replaced my Wrangler RTS tires with BFG all terrains. I love them. They are rather pricey, but several places will beat the lowest price you find. Onlinetires.com has the stock 265/70/17's that came on my truck for $160 each. That is the cheapest price I found on the internet. Sears has these tires also, and will beat the lowest price you find by 10% of the difference. Sears list them at $185.99 each, so the price was $157.40 each. By far, the lowest price I have seen. 4 Wheel Parts list them at $177 each, and quoted me $155 in their store, but they did not have my size in stock, so I went to Sears and paid a few dollars more.
I wouldn't buy anything else, and at $157 each, there is only a $14 difference between BFG, and other brands.

Smokyfx4,
You may be right. We have a four wheel parts here in Cleveland, Ohio and they matched the online price, but did not have them in stock. Now that I think about it, Sears matched the price four wheel parts gave me on their match. They did note the phone number for four wheel parts, but did not call them.

Sam's club
If you have a membership, they have BFG LT265/75R16s for $137 ea. at the one I visited just recently (grand prairie, texas).
By far the best deal I had seen anywhere for the BFGs.

Hello scgirl,
I have the Goodyear AT/S's in LT275/70-17's, it's a little bigger that stock size. I have 25,000 on mine and still have more than half the tread left. I have taken these tires everywhere from off-roading in Death Valley, through 2 feet of snow in the Sierra Nevada Mountains to driving to work and back on the freeway every day with no problems what so ever. You can get them from www.tirerack.com for $144 plus shipping.

Go with the BFG AT's!!!
I blew (ripped to shreds) 2 of the the stock junk tires on my '97 F150 with the 17 alloys on a single wheelin' trip in Arizona. Replaced them with BFG All-Terain KO's about 30k miles ago, and there's still more than 50% tread left.
I dunno what they sell for now, but after ripping the 2-ply sidewall on the stock tires, I'm reluctant to go ANYWHERE off-road without the 3-ply sidewall the BFG AT's have.
I haven't found any other tire with a 3-ply sidewall. That alone is worth the few extra $$ for the BFG's.
As far as highway noise, it's a non-issue. Crack a window, start a conversation, or turn on the radio and it goes away.

The Goodyear Wrangler AT/S is a decent tire, but gets hard at about 40k miles. Still a lot of tread left to run 80k miles, but rain and snow performance rapidly deteriorates.
I have had both the Revos and BFG AT KO. The Revo is a better street tire.
