Post Too much Tire Spin

I drive pretty sedately. My 4.6 auto
w/ LS rear end always wants to spin
the tires. This IS my first V8 truck.
16" wheels w/ Michelin LTX M/S tires.
Plenty of tread left. I'd probably
complain if I couldn't spin them, but
it happens a lot by accident. I
really don't think I'm a lead foot.
Should I look for a softer tire
compound? Is this normal for these
trucks?

Hello MOVEOVER,

Man, most of the people on this site are trying to achieve what your trying to eliminate! I can't get my tires to spin unless there's dirt or water on the road. You should find out what "extra" you have that's doing this and patent it!

I'm no mechanic but I know some guy's who hold there brakes down slightly and give the gas pedal a nudge and this causes the spin your describing. So,
it could be a problem with your front brakes.? That's the only thing I can think of.

Good luck,
Mark

MARK G, Funny you should say that about brakes. Please see the topic I started earlier today in "Brakes". I really don't think they're draggig that much though. When I got the unprovoked squeal, it was about the same as touching the brakes for the brake lights. It coasts real easily...
A/C always on. I do get 13mpg. 11 if I'm not careful. I've started wondering if I've got a super-chip.--Joe

I think you might want to get that checked MOVEOVER.
After reading your other post and seeing your mileage your brakes may be dragging or worse.

Good Luck

Hi MOVEOVER,these Michelin tires, did they come as orginal tires?
I had these on a TownCar, back in 94, they were MSX, or something close to that, very hard rubber 80,000 mile tire and were terrible on wet roads.
When you can light up both tires on a Town Car, it makes people take note, they were a good wearing tire, but that's about all.
What's your tire size? Mine were 235/60 16".
Take care,.............Dogcam

Cool

As you can see I have the 4.6L. I have an auto trans. and the original tires. I also have the 3.55 ls rear-end. The only performance add-on I've done is the K&N filter. I know that my brakes aren't dragging and there is nothing wrong with my truck.
If I do a WOT from a dead stop on dry pavement. The Tires will spin. I don't know how long they will spin because I dont want to burn off the rubber but it's quite a while.
I just wanted moveover to know that there might not be any kind of problem. Just a good truck.

Question

Hey J_G_G,
How long do you think you can spin the tires?
I have essentially the same truck and on a flat, dry, pavement with 1 lb less than max air pressure: I Go CHIRP....

Their must be something different about your truck...?

How many miles you got?

Thanks ,
Mark

Green Giant,
Thanks for your response. What's your MPG average? Do you have the long bed? I didn't think the brakes were causing it. Truck moves around just fine in a parking lot. It wouldn't if the brakes were dragging that much. I was just thinking my tires were flaky or 3.55 LS was not the best match. Years ago, I would've been delighted with the tires spinning. Haven't had a ticket for 15 yrs now. I don't want to get one just for turning a corner or pulling forward from a stop. You see, I wouldn't mind as much if I got one for doing wheelies or something on a Ninja. The adrenaline might outweigh the risk. Anyway, I may try different tires in the future. I won't alter the rear end because I'm not sure we'll keep it forever. We kind of want a 250 deisel. When was your truck manufactured? Mine was 2/96
Joe

Cool

For Mark_G: I don't really know how long they will spin. I havn't laid into it yet.
From what I see it seems that I do have something different but I don't know what it would be. except for the K&N the engine is stock as far as I know. I have 27,000 miles on it.

For Moveover: I have the short bed and I get about 15 in town and about 20 on the interstate. I've only had the truck for about two weeks. I don't really know yet how the fuel will look in the long run.
