Question Correct rim size?

I'm putting a 3" body lift on my 02 XLT FX4 Screw. I'm also putting BFG 315/75R16 AT KO's on with new Mickey Thompson Classic II rims. I went to order the rims with intentions of getting 16x8" rims. The owner of the shop said that I should get 16x10" for this size tire. Will the 10" rim cause the tire to stick out too far from the wheelwell? I don't pick the rims up until Tuesday the 25th. I'd like a clean look. I've seen some lifted trucks where the tires stick way too far outside the wheelwell for my taste. I'd hate to spend this kind of money only to be disappointed when I go to pick the truck up after the lift and tires are installed. Any feedback or pics from anyone that's done this or used this size rim would be appreciated.

Most of that will depend on the backspacing of the wheel some wheels in order to fit larger tires must move outside the fender well in order to clear suspension componets. I would suggest that you go the the tire place and test fit the rim and tire on the truck most places will allow you to do this before sheeling out the cash. I think the tire you are looking at isa 12.50 inches wide in which case it is highly recomended you use a 10" wide wheel which is why the guy told you that. I think some people on here runa 12.50" tires on 8"wide wheels but am not sure about that. Your tie is essentiallya 35x12.50x16 which will stick out the fender well how far will depend on the wheel backspacing. Why are you going with the body lift and this tire by the way? You could skip the body lift and runa 305 or 295 and still use a 16x8 wheel.

Richard is right about the backspacing - that will determine where your wheel sits. At least on the '03s I know that stock is 4.625" - probably the same on the '02's. You may need a wheel with less backspacing (stick further out) to clear those tires with only a 3" body lift. I don't see any problem with running 12.50's on an 8" rim - plenty do it with no problems. The tire guy probably recommends the 10" wide because they are more expensive

If you deflate the tires for off road use the 8's will be better. You can run the 8's at a lower pressure and still retain a good tire shape, the rim is more inset from the edge so the bead will remain safer, but most importantly, the stress imposed on all steering/suspension components will be less as the rotational axis is more inline with the hub center, (i.e. the wider the rim, the more stress on the parts)

Decide for yourself. This is my Screw at stock height, with 285/75 BFG's on 16x10 Eagle 589's with 4.5 inches of backspacing. Most 16x10's have approximately the same amount of backspacing (4.5 or 4 5/8 inches). I personally think the 10 inch wide rims look better. The outer edge of the wheel and tire are about even with the edge of the fender. They don't "stick out" like the 15x10's on the older trucks do.

Nice pic except that you can't really see the tires on it becasue it is so dark. I run BFG 285/75/16's on a 16x8 with around 5" back spacing or what is calleda +14 offset so this is what they look like on my truck.

Or you can go to my gallery and look at the othervarious pics I have showing other views

Thumbs up

To all of you who responded with info and pics I really appreciate it. I picked up my rims today. I went with the 16x10" rim. After talking with a couple of friends at work who have modified their trucks I felt that the 10" rim would work the best. I also found out that the truck I was using as a measuring stick had 16x10" rims, not 16x8". It looks GOOD!! My tires should be here tomorrow or Thursday. Once they're mounted and balanced on the rims, I'm having the lift put on. Hopefully by this weekend. I'm going to post pics once I have it finished. It's going to look GREAT!!!!!
