Question irregular vibration

My tires still have tread left, but the rear especially seems to vibrate... i have not had the rotors turned (i guess they're drum in rear?) When I bought the truck, the idiot before me decided that driving with parking brake on was a good idea and all that had to be replaced exactly a year ago. I know that i need breaks (it vibrates when breaking too) could it be the tires???

Start with the tires

I'd start by changing out the tires. You may find out something simply by rotating them front to back and see if the vibration is worse toward the front after the switch.

My 2000 has disc brakes all the way around, so yours may as well. I don't know if it's different between 2WD and 4WD trucks.

Sounds like the place to start with the all 4 wheels in the air and pull the tires. How many miles are on the tires and on the truck?

well there is 53 on the truck... and the tires are probably the ones that came with it after looking at them. They are the Goodyear Wrangler RTS 235 70 17's. I guess they are due for a change

If you have 17" wheels you have 265/70/17s, not 235/70/17s. You also have 4 wheel disc brakes. All F150s (4x4 and 4x2) from 99 on have discs. Only 97/98 had rear drums. Pull the tires off and check the discs to see if theres any pronounced grooving or cracking going on. If they're grooved then they can be turned out if its not too severe. If they're cracked you gotta replace them. This can happen from high temperatures from doing things like riding on the brakes or driving with your ebrake on.

Question is does it do this at certain speeds only or all the time? With that many miles you MIGHT have a blown belt in one of the tires. Go around and visually check the tires for bulges or other defects. Also it is possible they're just out of balance. If it does it at certain speeds then its possible its either alignment issues or balancing problems.

Took it to shop in town to have them balance, start with the cheapest solution first. They came back and said the tires had good tread left but they had flot spots and that was causing the vibration at highspeeds (70-75). So some new tires are inorder... but there lies another problem... MONEY! So it looks like it's going to be some walmart tires for the rear for a month or two... yuck.

I have the same problem, and just solved it.

I have two F-150s, one vibrates, and the other doesn't. Thursday I stopped at Sam's Club, bought a good jack, went home and swapped tires between the two trucks. The problem clearly followed the tires.

Last week I had a 4x4 SuperCrew that vibrated down the road, this week I have a 4x2 SuperCab that vibrates down the road.

I have to say though, those 265/75/17 Chrome wheels look real nice on the 4x2 XLT.

You may want to check the Rotors they may be warped and if you have flat spots on the tries that usally means bad shock absorbers whcih at highway speeds will tend to let the tires bounce up and down just enough to cause flat spots. So the best place to start is of course with ta balnce job on all four tires, then check rotors the shocks as all of these can cause vibrations. My bet form what you say about the guy driveing with the Parking Brake on is he was very hard on the brake system and the rotors are warped and if the tires have flat spots guess is shocks are bad also.

Well I think they had the shocks replaced, because they are not the rancho shocks they are supposed to be... just black with no lettering. But after my posts about the ABS light and the brakes and the responses there and now these replies I think i'm just going to take it to a Ford Dealer and let them work on while it is still in warranty... hopefully some of this is covered

now time to

Hmm... that's strange, because everything i've read about the F150 OR Larait said it had skid plates and rancho shocks.

The Off Road group included HD shock absorbers, the FX4 Off Road group included Rancho HD shock absorbers. Both included skid plates.
