If I get these tires, is it necessary to change the torsion bars or other suspension? I had the 265's on my '99 Sport, but after I totalled it last winter and replaced it with this '02 OR, I just haven't wanted to come up with the $ for 265's, if 285's were fairly easy to install.

 

Nope, don't have to modify anything for them to fit.

 

Thanks, I've got almost 20k on my Goodyears, which has been too long. I've been sort of cash poor after getting a new truck unexpectedly and only a 6 months after the BFG's were new!

I understand his loss of a '99 SC Sport Red on Red. I never got tired of people telling me how great it looked. My new red OR is IMO by comparison. Maybe these 285/70/17's will make it stand out. I had noticed 1.5 mpg loss when I had put BFG TA KO 265/70/17 on it, but what an improved experience.

 

I just got 285/70/17 Goodyear Wrangler MT/R's and they fit just fine. I didn't do anything to the suspension and I have zero rubbing!!! Good Luck

 

im not sure they make tha size in AT but they do in MT.

I have the 285/70/17 BFG AT/KO's on my factory 10 spoke rim's.
They fit fine with no rubbing at all or cranking the t-bar's at all.
I did crank the t-bar's since to level the truck a bit since then & tomorrow I putting a set of Weld sidewinder's on in 17x8 with a 4.625 back spacing so I'll see if that work's without hitting/rubbing.

You should be fine doing it & with the BFG AT's it will look really nice. Well worth the $$ IMO.

 

Looking at your trucks bio we have about the same truck, except mine is the 2001.

How do you like your Goodyears? You have any photo's by chance? What about road noise or ride comfort? Is there much difference?

And finally under optimal conditions, how many miles should they last? I was talking to a BFG dealer and he scared me he said about 40k on the ATKO 285.70.17. That would only last me a year and a half.

I currently have the stock GY 265.70.17 RT with 43k miles and they still have another 15-20 miles left on them.

I had the BFG TA KO 265/70/17's on my '99 Sport and the noise was never noticable. If you look at modern tires closely, you will see that the lugs are slightly different sizes as you go around the circumference. This has defeated the building resonance that used to be a howling standard on most truck tires and just got louder with size. As far as the RTS's, I had 50k on my '99 before I put the new tires on them based a lot on the great input of this web forum. I had noticed that hydroplaning was getting worse and overall traction was less. When I bought the new BFG's, I immediately noticed that cornering had improved response. I only regret this time of not seeing if I could have traded them in on some BFG 285's as some one said they got $300 on trade. I also put a lot of miles on my truck. I have 20k since last March.

Let's see. I really like the Goodyear's in both looks and function they work great. There is some road noise, but no a deafining sound. The ride is just a little rougher also, but very little, not that noticable. My tire guy said I should get 40 to 50 thousand or more out of them as long as I rotate them every 7000 miles or so. I really like them, but they are pricey and if you drive a lot they may not be a good choice. I only drive about 15,000 a year or so, so they are good for me.
