Thumbs down rear brakes on "98 locking up

when it's raining or very humid on my truck (specs below) my rear brakes for the first couple of stops, lock up solid. the anti-locks don't kick in but i look like an idiot sliding into a red light for no reason. I talked to two different dealers who both said it's perfectly normal.(for some reason, i don't think so) they say that the shoes swell from the moister and after a few stops they heat up, dry out and work normal.(I looked in the mirror but didn't see stupid written on my forehead).Giving them the benefit of the doubt i'm going to replace the shoes, it's cheap enough. Has anybody had a similair problem and if so what type of shoe did you use? Metallic, Semi-Metalliac, Kevlar, Bonded, Rivited. I'll try anything that will keep my face off the windshield. Thanks in advance.

Go back to the dealer and punch him right in the fu%$in face and tell him its the moisture in your body making it happen but it will wear off in a few more punches.

I have the EXACT same problem. But my warranty is up, so what can I do? So what I do now is for the first few feet (out of the driveway) I kinda 'work-out' the brakes a bit; I depress them lightly 2 or 3 times and that seems to do the trick. I'd love nothing more than to have new shoes put on, but I know the dealer will just laugh in my face if I try.

yea, HAD the same problem. Got the same response from the dealer then went out and got new pads. I don't recall the brand off hand, but haven't had any problems since. I believe that my pads got so stiff after going from a different duty station that changing the pads would do the trick. In addition to the sliding at the light (very funny, mine was sliding in front of my son's daycare center at a stop sign and the signs don't change!) I had a terrible screech when applying the brakes. I slid and sounded bad. I don't think it could have been worse. Change the pads and you should be fine.

mashie banks I am Glad you liked that suggestion and for a dealer to say that with a straight face he would surely deserve a fat lip at the least!!. As for the brakes i replaced mine at 27,000 miles (the fronts) because ford wanted 145.00 to do it and i did it for the price of the brakes which was 27.99 You do the math. (rotor were fine.) And i to shall drop a mighty buck this fall i am sure!!

look into the idea that was already posted, I have a 98 with the same problem and im getting the dealer to fix it by adding those 250 brakes, i didnt think it would work but my friend did it with his 99 150 and it brakes as well as anotherf friends 250 (much stiffer stops, and no squeeks)

Changed brakes twice, went to Wearever metallic, and the same thing. Now I'm with Raybestos, and the same thing. I think these are metallic, but I'm not sure. When I first start out, I barely tap my brake and hold it until it warms up and then I'm okay, but it feels like I just ran over a native when they lock up. I hate that, I thought it was just me.
