I think Ive decided on MT/R's in 285...

I know a few of you have these on your rigs. Is 50000 miles out of this tire out of the question??? Wheres the cheapest place around to get 'em??? The goodyear place wants like $210 apiece without tax. Is this the norm???

Hey HARVESTER,

I've been thinking about the MTRs in a 285 as well. I checked Wal-Mart and they quoted me $201.95 a piece for the Goodyear Wrangler MTR in a LT285/70/17. Or $186.95 for the 265/70/17. Then it's $9.76 per tire for mount, balance, free rotations for life of the tire, road hazard, etc. That's been about the best price I've found.

Good luck with your decision,

Mark D

The best price I have seen for the 285's is $199.00 installed and $208 installed for the 305's. Is there a reason that you are not going to go with the 305's???? I really don't know which ones to get. I have been told that there isn't that much difference in size between the two and I have also been told that the 305's sometimes may rub if going off road. I may never go off road and if so once on a muddy road, that is all. Just don't know which size to get. Anyone have an opinion on what size to get???

Josho66...Im not going with the 305's for 2 reasons. One, I think that the 305 is really pushing the limits for the stock pizza cutter rim and two is that I dont want to go with a tire thats like 34" tall. If I had 3.73's in the rear or like 4.10's..maybe. Ive got 3.55's and I dont want to be "geared" any taller. The 285's are like an inch taller than stock which is "acceptable" to me. Two inches taller would not.

Thanks MarkD....I never thought to try Wal-Mart...Ill let you know.

I never thought of that. I don't know anything about gears, but since you do i will listen to what you say That is just one more reason it looks like I will go with the 285's also.

Gearing is quite simple actually if you think about it. Think of it like a ten speed bike. The lower the gearing, the easier it is to pedal but you have a limited top speed. Switch to a taller gear and it becomes harder to pedal but you go faster. (the taller the gearing, the lower the final drive ratio). Now put that in truck terms. Think of the motor as your legs. The higher you gear it, the harder the motor has to work to maintain any given speed. Now going up one inch in tire diameter (32 to a 33)would be about a 3% increase. So if you have a 3.55 final drive ratio, you would now have a 3.44 final drive. Going 2 inches taller would net you a 3.32 final drive, which I dont want. There are exceptions of course. Since our trucks will never hit redline in top gear, gearing higher may not net you any more top speed. I had my truck flat out pegged at 100 in OD and just simply didnt have the power to pull any higher rpm's. (about 3200 if Im not mistaken) Bigger tires (or gearing it taller) may see a lower redline in top gear becuase of power issues.

Confused yet???

Bottom line is that for my setup..(4.6, 5 speed. x-cab) 3.55 is about the highest I would want to go. Much higher would result in poor performance. Now if you have a 5.4 with 3.73's...well than maybe you could pull the 305's without losing much performance.

Or somethimg like that......

That makes it a little easier for me to figure out. I have no idea what type of gears my 2000 F150 with the 5.4 and off road package has, but I would assume the larger tires may mess it up also.

Thanks for the info.

if you have a 2000 F150 w/ the off road package, then you have a 3.55 rear end - it's the only one that came w/ the ORP package

I know nothing about gears, is that one bad??? Also I am going to get larger tires, is that going to kill me with those gears???

You should be fine. The 5.4 as an animal and will have no problem pulling the 285's. Although the 4.6 mated with the 5-speed isnt bad if your banging through the gears, but get up on the highway in OD and you really see the difference. Ive actually raced a 5.4 from a dead stop. Up until about 70 its pretty even...then its see ya. I may get a set of 3.73's next year to help out with the 285's.

By the way...whats the best price youve found?? The best I can find is $865, tax included.

Thanks for the info. I am getting 4 285/70/17 MTR's for $895 installed with tax from a local dealer.
