Post Hello and Brake Dust Shields

Hello, All!

I've been reading this forum since I got my new truck 3 weeks ago. I'd like to say THANK YOU to all the members for providing invaluable advice on what to get and do, and what NOT to get and do! Thanks a million.

After cleaning, polishing, prepping, waxing, tire trimming, RainX polishing and vacuuming my truck yesterday (7 hours!), I was wondering if anyone knows where I can get some of those brake dust shields for a 2000 Ford F-150 with the cast aluminum (5-"spoke") wheels. Cleaning out brake dust is a chore, and I've seen these items at the local auto store. Any advice?

Thanks!

Welcome to the board!
Can you explain a bit more about these shields? Do they fit on the wheel itself, or between brake rotor and wheel hub, or ???
Somebody here probably knows or has seen them, if you could just explain a bit more...

Hi Granpa,

These shields appear to go between the tire and everything else. Imagine removing your tire, shoving a pie tin onto the lugs, and then replacing the tire and you've got the general idea... The one's I've seen at Pep Boys and in the JC Whitney catalog (see http://www.jcwhitney.com/productnoit...?CATID=51937).

Has anyone used these on a 2000 F-150? An inquiring mind wants to know!

Thanks

Just as I thought. The ones at Styling Concepts don't fit Fords:

"* Will not fit Dodge or Ford trucks, 4wd vehicles, or any vehicle where the brake caliper extends inside the wheel."

Bummer.

I have the same 5 spoke wheels. I ordered them because I thought they would be easier to clean as the G-friend's jetta has similar wheels. The VW dealer, detail shop suggests putting tire dressing on the entire wheel. The dust sticks to it a little more but it is very easy to wipe off. I have been doing this to her car since last summer and my truck gets it about every week and a half (I drive about 600-700 miles a week) It does wipe right off and may be an alternative to shields. I would be concerned about the brakes overheating and fading with shields.

Just a thought..

Hey folks,

Check out www.kleenwheels.com

They have them for the F150's and SuperDuty's.

Sorry,

Forget Kleen Wheels. Looks like they don't make them. My mistake.

Yo Jupiterak,

Thanks for the tip! You were certainly headed in the right direction. I can understand why you gave up, though. Their website needs serious QA work!

I checked the Kleen Wheels website and got a 404 error when I checked availability on 2000 F-150's. I emailed them directly so they could 1) Fix their website and 2) Tell me if they've got shields for my truck. I got this response in less than 3 hours, which is pretty darn good.

"IF YOU HAVE 5 SPOKE WHEELS USE #2024, IF THEY ARE A 5 SLOT DESIGN, USE #2025 (SLOTS ARE SORT OF TEAR DROPPED SHAPED.) ... CALL US AT 18003286548 FOR YOUR NEAREST DEALER AND FURTHER INFO. M-F 9-5PM EST."

I'm gonna order the 2024's and tell y'all how it comes out.

Thanks again,

UPDATE:

I just ordered 2 pair from JC Whitney. After answering the endless litany of questions from the wonderful Annette, I told her to order their model 2024.

Stay tuned...

Thumbs up

Well folks, I got the Kleen Wheels brake shields from JC Whitney and installed them last weekend. They didn't "stick" inside the wheel like the instructions say they should, but they mounted just fine by simply placing them on the lugs first before re-mounting the tire. They look great and work flawlessly.

I recommend them if you like nice, subtle finishing touches on your exterior package, or if you just hate cleaning wheels like I do!

Just a bit of info for you guys looking into these shields:

A friend of mine recently purchased a BMW Z3 and it came from BMW with a warning in the manual, on the cd, as well as a sticker on the windshield that stated that the use of shields would void the warranty on the disk brakes.

I'll try to get the exact verbiage from him and post tomorrow.

Personally, I agree that cleaning the wheels is a pain, but I worry too much about the excess heat build up that may result from adding these.
