I don't know who manufactures the Motorcraft oil but I have been using the 5W-20 in our 02 Explorer since we purchased it last December and it has worked fine without incident in the Explorer. BTW, the Explorer has the 4.6 V-8.

I have heard that Motocraft gets thier oil from Valvoline, and also from Conoco...seems like they make a deal with an oil company and that company makes the oil for them until the contract is up. Then negotiations happen again...

I use MC 5w-20 Syn blend/MC Filters also...without any problems....

Wink 5W20

I have had some oil consumption problems with my 2002 S'cab, at 9,000 miles now, while talking with Ford people while testing for this problem. They stated that the use of 5W 20 will save a estamated tens of thousands of fuel of a years production "fleet" in other words every Ford product built in a years time. If they all use 5W 20 oil. So now I'm using motorcraft 5W 30 which will not do any damage. BTW my 5.4L gets 15-17 MPG at 70- 80 MPH.
Good luck.............

I used 5w20 Last winter for the first time with about 38k miles on my 1999 4.6L. Had no problem or noticeable oil use until ...... I went on a 600 mile round trip, in April, pulling a tent camper. I burned just over a quart each way. Switched back to 5w30 and did not noticeably use any oil since. I still have a case of Castrol 5w20 to use up, so will use it only in December, January, and February, here in Wisconsin winters. From then on I'll stick to 5w30 12 months/year. JMHO

Called Conoco: All Motorcraft oils start with the group III hydrocracked base oil (hydroclear per Conoco). The 5W-20 is also comprised of 10-20% (wouldn't say which) of a group IV PAO based synthetic, with proprietary friction modifiers.
