Question How much oil in 5.4L?

Had the dealer do my first oil & filter change. I noted on the invoice that they put in 7 qts of 5W20. My owners manual states 6 qts with the filter change. Called the dealer and he advised it requires 6.5 qts and they have to charge by full quarts. Anyone else have this experience? Or did they put too much in???

Question

I do my own and 6 qts will usually bring the level right up to the middle of the safe zone on the dipstick. I used to put a little more in ,like your dealer, but 6 qts with a new filter is what FORD requires. If you have any question, check the back section of your owner's manual. Good luck...

Mine will take 5 quarts before anything shows on the stick. The 6th quart puts it in the middle. I fill the filter up before putting it on, so it has some oil in it prior to starting the first time (from one of the first 5 quarts). Just put 6 in, period. An extra 1/2 qt is not going to make any difference anyway with protecting the engine. Too much could cause problems. The range is a MIN and MAX, not empty or full like the old days.

Question

MN2001F-150 - where is the level reading on your dip stick? If it's in the "safe" area and it's fine. If it's over the max mark, i would give them a call and complain.

PS. I'm from Minnesota, what was the dealer?

Tony

Hello tfratzke, My dealer is Tousley Ford in White Bear Lake. I've got an F150 XLT 4x4, Off Road & Towing packages, Arizona Beige, chrome nerf bars, bug and side window wind deflectors. I really do like it a lot!Who is your dealer? Got the right radiator? I'm working with Tousley right now with this issue.......wish me luck!

Wrong radiator for me, i bought mine at Apple Ford in Shakopee. Let me know if Tousley takes care of you radiator, would be interesting to know. I personally have not even pursued the whole radiator issue, so i can't say what Apple Ford does.

A dealer tried to tell me the same thing on my wife's 00 Expy w/5.4. I told him to show me a service bulletin that said 7qts, and a dipstick that would be in the safe zone with 7qts, and I would believe him. I change the oil in both the Exp, and my 01 F-150, both with 5.4, and 6 quarts puts both of them right in the middle of the safe zone.

Thanks for all the input. I haven't checked the dipstick due to every place I park being sloped. I took it to the dealer only because of the messages stating the first filter removal being a knuckle bustin', need a keg and 4 friends event. I will change my own now and use 6 qts.

I have had a similar experience when I have taken my 2000 F150 4.6l V8 in for oil changes. I have had the oil changed 3 times all at the dealer. On the first occasion I did not look closely at the invoice to see how much oil was used. On the 2nd oil change I noticed as I was driving away from the dealership that they used 7 quarts of oil. When I arrived at work (about 3.5 miles from the dealer) I checked the owner’s manual and confirmed that it indicated the correct amount to be 6 quarts of oil. I waited about an hour and checked the dipstick and it seemed to be just above the max line. I called the dealer and reported it and they advised me to bring the truck in so they could check it out. When I got to the dealer they took the truck straight from the service drive into the shop area and within 3 minutes the truck was back in the service drive and I was advised that everything was OK. I mentioned that the owners manual indicated that 6 quarts was the correct amount and I was still concerned and they gave me a coupon for a free oil change on my next visit. On the next oil change they did the same thing when I confronted the service manager about this and mentioned the owners manual he said” the book is wrong” and mentioned some specification change however he was unable to show me a TSB. I have been trying to get anything that shows me a specification change and the service manager did eventually fax me a page out of an updated service manual that indicated the oil capacity specification of 6.675 ± 0.125 for a 4.6l engine with AT however, I have pressed the dealer to show me something more official like an addendum to my owners manual or anything with Ford letterhead that says the spec has changed. So far I have been unsuccessful however I am planning on escalating the issue past the dealer.

Question

This is my 3rd truck with the 5.4 and have never had a dealer or lube shop change my oil till last week. I have been traveling so much and didn't have time to do it myself, went to the local Ford dealer(in PA) and had a filter and oil change.
Looked at the receipt and it showed 1 filter and 6.5 qts 5-20W oil. I asked the service guy and he said they have been doing the 6.5 qts since Model year 01 came out. The lead tech (Small Dealership), said he went up to MI for schooling last Fall and was told to start making the change to 6.5 qts/5-20W oil...I guess it's a Ford thing.

All in all my dip stick shows, filled to the top of the full marker and the slight ticking on my left bank of the motor has stopped.(does this on start ups)
I'll run it that way and when it come time for another change, I'll put in 6 qts and see if the ticking comes back.
Oh by the way the Ford dealer in NC uses 5-30 oil and the Pa dealer uses only 5-20, location and weather may make the difference, who knows??

How do you manage to do that without getting oil all over the place? The filter on the 5.4L is a horizontal mount style. Is it different on the 4.6L? I used to fill up the filter on my Ranger but it was much closer to a vertical mount style.

GAH, filter on my 98 4.6 is horizontal. Easy to get to and change. Only takes couple minutes to change with no mess.
