I'm so very sorry about your son. Had he been ill? My heart goes out to you.

I got a slight rough Idle after installing a spintech muffler, I strapped up the exhaust to eliminate the vibration theory, made no difference. I just installed a pheonlic throttle body spacer from trickflow (from Summit) after the install I noticed the roughness was greatly reduced.

jstang,
No, he wasn't sick before he passed out at school that morning. He was a perfectly healthy 10 year old. The doctors call what he had "Long QT Syndrone". It's a heart problem . We have also found out the my wife and younger son also have the same thing. They are both now on medication. It can help control, but unfortunately it can't be prevented from happening again to one of them. Saddest part of all this is with a simple EKG and a 2 dollar bottle of pills we could still have our son with us!!

So Sorry

36, It's me Mark -- I had tears come to my eyes when I read about your terrible loss -- it really makes everything here or anywhere else on the internet inconsequetial in comparison. All I could think about was one of my 3 kids (now adults) or my 7 grandkids. Joyce and I send our deepest feelings your way -- Mark

36Racin...

36racin,

Deepest Condolences on the loss of your child. May GOD bless your family during this trying time.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I have a 2002 Mustang GT, purchsed new. It now has 300 miles on it, and I noticed a miss at IDLE, with the AC off. Turn the AC on, and it goes away. It does this in Gear, with clutch pedal depressed, and also when sitting in Neutral.

I cannot take it to the shop until the 19th of the month. I am hoping it is bad gas, but do not think so. Been running on this tank for 3 days now. 87 Octane Chevron.

If it were my '68 Ranchero, I would say the points were shot. That is, if I still had a points system. I am now running a Pertronix Ignitor, to remedy the points problem

Rough IDLE or not

I have a 2001 Ford F150 Supercrew with 5.4. It has the rough idle problem also. From day one. Taken to shop 3 times and they find nothing. Last time they told me that they loosened the motor mounts, lifted engine and place back correctly and
retighened the motor mounts. Right, give me a break - still rough idle. Other than that it runs good. Only have about 8,000 miles so still early.

Joe,
If you can live with spending 25+ thousand dollars on a new truck and have it acting up then do so. If not then keep bringing the truck back as many times as you can. Document who, what, when, where and How. document everything or person you talk to. Make sure you get reciepts for everything. You may need them oneday. The more documentation the better.

Rough Idle

I started up my truck on a hot, humid morning a few months back. It sounded and acted like it was running on 6 cylinders.

I shut it off, and restarted. It was not present on the 2nd start. Had the oil changed that afternoon. It's been fine since then.

On the other hand, my '02 Mustang GT has a inconsistent Idle. When AC is on, everything is fine. Turn AC off, and it runs a lil' rough. I can notice a 100-200 RPM Flux. Turn the AC on, and it goes away. It occurs, whether Clutch is engaged, or whether it is disengaged. (See post from 7/10/02) Changed Gas Brands, and not as noticeable.

www.Alldata.com has TSB and Recall listings. There are a few for Vac Leak problems, and PCV problems.

I to have a miss that I have had since 12,000 miles and the dealer messed around changeing spark plug after spark plug and wire's becuause thats what his computor told him to do. They never even test drove the truck. I will give him this, it did fix the problem for a day or 2 or maybe a month, but it always came back. You guessed it my truck's warrenty ran out and they were done with it, and now my truck has about 117,000 on it and its still there. I just lerned to live with it, then I just found this forum and I hope I will come across something in here.

Rough idle here. Started at about 40,000 miles. Currently have 47,000 miles. Been in the shop a couple of times. Waist of money they just "I dunno".

It's been quite awhile since I last looked at this post. I am wondering if the new designed 5.4's are having the rough idling problems we have had with the older model motors?? My truck now has 88,000 miles now. Rough idle problem still there. I just tend to ignore it now.

98 4.2L (build 5/98) -

The rough idle started on mine about 6 mos. ago (70K). It ran OK, but idled so poorly (usually) that I thought it would stall. It was maddening that it sometimes idled just fine.

At my wits end, I purchased a can of 'engine starting fluid' and proceeded to spray the entire intake - The idle picks way up when the spray hits on/near the leak. I found it! There is a rubber elbow on the under side of the intake manifold (opposite the IAC) that is the return for the passenger side crankcase vent. The elbow had a small hole. I replaced the part - It works great now.

This problem is very difficult to diagnose because:

1. I did not get a 'check engine' light until the problem got really, really bad.

2. The engine would occasionally idle just fine.

3. I couldn't even see the bad part until I partially stripped the intake manifold.

I'd recommend the 'starting fluid' test to anyone with the rough idle problem - be very careful (or make sure that your medical insurance covers burn treatment).

Jim

Take the Vac line off of the EGR. If the engine runs good then the EGR is bad, Or the cheaper fix, The vacuum control valve. Located in the middle of the block at the rear. You can follow the vac line around the rear of the motor to the controller. To test the vac control take the elect plug off of it, Start it up, If you still have vacuum at the EGR line, The vacuum control is bad. It sells for around $40.00.
