ROUGH IDLE OR NOT?????
My problem is not fixed
Well, I picked up my truck from the dealer Friday afternoon and immediately noticed the rough idle still there. I told the service manager and he apologized and told me to bring it back Monday morning (which I did). He told me they would make it right and I wouldn't have to keep paying until they found out what it was. I haven't heard from him yet, but will keep you informed on the results. I drove it around all weekend and the rough idle was definitely still there. Oh well.

My tach never moves and it never stalls or dies on me. My check engine light has never come on either. My problem only occurs at idle (in Park and in gear). It is a slight bump in the idle that is barely noticeable, but is driving me crazy. I took it to a local dealer today and the service manager was very nice and sat in the truck with it cranked. He noticed the slight "bump" in the idle. He said he thought it was the #3 or #4 coil pack and asked me to bring it back tomorrow so his mechanic can look at it. I will take it in and see what happens. Has anyone else got a similar problem to mine that has had the coils replaced? Thanks in advance.

It is driving me nuts.
My truck was at the dealer for this problem 2 days.
It ran a little bit better afterwards but the problem is back.
#4 coil pack had been replaced a time ago.

So far it is still working with no problems. Do you have a superchip. I took mine out at the same time they replaced the MAF and I have not returned it yet.. I called superchip and they say it is not the chip. I will know when I put it back in. Hope this helps.

JUST UPDATING. MY TRUCK PROBLEMS STILL EXIST. BY THE LOOK OF IT MORE AND MORE PEOPLE ARE HAVING THE ROUGH IDLE PROBLEM. NONE SEEM TO BE GETTING THEIR TRUCKS FIXED. FORD HAS SOME SERIOUS PROBLEMS AND WE ALL NEED OUR PROBLEMS ADDRESSED. I WILL KEEP EVERYONE INFORMED OF MY STATUS. THANKS FOR THE SUPPORT.
I have a 97 F150XLT (4.6L v8) with 81K miles, it does have a bit of a rough idle too. I just replaced the plugs/wires/pcv valve/fuel filter/air filter, and it is still there. I haven't owned the truck too long, but it has always been there....
My 97 F150 Lariat (4.6) DOES have the problem. I purchased it at 19,000 miles and it always idled a little rough. It now has 47,000 miles. When it idles rough now, it drops to 200 rpm and even stalls on occasion. I thought the Superchip may help, but it didn't change the idle. I recently took the chip out, reset the computer and the problem is still there. The reviews of the Ford truck at the time got me to buy it, but now I'd have to say I am sorry I did. Unless Ford can change my mind, I'm back to GM.

BUT I NEED TO FIND OUT WHAT SET THE LIGHT OFF. ANYONE KNOW HOW I COULD DO THIS??? I DON'T HAVE ONE OF THE CODE READERS. ARE THEY EXPENSIVE?? OR IS THERE ANOTHER WAY TO TELL. MY TRUCK NOW HAS 39,500 MILES ON IT COULD THIS BE TRIGGERED BY MILEAGE?? THANKS

One week report.
Well, its been a week now since I did the shade tree fix on my rough idle and its still running smooth.
As a recap; my idle was rough and would stall at stops. What I did:
1) unhooked the battery to erase any error codes and to reset any adaptive learning control modifications.
2) let the truck idle in PARK for about 10 minutes (rough idle and stall still there)
3) let the truck idle in NEUTRAL for about 10 minutes (rough idle and stall still there)
4) let the truck idle in DRIVE for about 10 minutes (rough idle and stall GONE)
I now have about 300 miles and a dozen trips, things still running smooth.
YMMV

Got my truck back today. It seems to be OK so far. They replaced the slip yoke assembly for the tire stutter, and "equalized" the motor mounts for the rough idle.
I'm not really sure that I trust these guys all that much. I don't believe that I will return to that dealer again. But so far so good.

Have a 2002 F150 supercab 4.6L V8 that has shaked since about the 3rd day I owned it... first trip into the service department was at 400 miles. They have told me the same lines of crap they have told everyone else on this post. I already have the new motor mounts and they even loosened mine up and have the engine reset into them. It is just a small shaking feeling and it drives me nuts like you all. Been told they are also working on a ECU update to address this problem. I will add my information to the other site and keep myself posted here.
Roger,
For what it costs I'm willing to give your cure a shot with my truck.
I would like to know to reproduce exactly what you did.
1) did you reset the computer every time between steps?
2) if you did not did you shut the truck off between steps or just proceeded to next step?
Thanks in advance for your time

Sly,
I apologize for taking so long to get back here.
I only reset the computer once. I shut the truck off and left it sit between steps. The steps were actually done over a multi-day period. I'd do one and test it for a day or two. Its seems the fix was the idle in drive "lesson".
Why does this "fix" work (if it does)? I believe there is probably some component that is operating out of the control program's expected range. For example, an O2 sensor that is out of spec or an injector that isn't squirting as expected. I blieve the idle in drive lesson allows the control program to adapt to the component that is out of the expected range.
Update: The rough idle and stall have not returned.

Have you tried contacting your local news media? Quite often the local news stations like doing these consumer interest stories, as was the case a year ago when I was having trouble with Ford.
For those of you who weren't around here last year, here is a brief synopsis of my problems. I had a Y2K F-150 4x4 ORP w/ 4.6L long box. The problems that I had were: Rail Dust (orange dots in my white paint), Passenger Side Head Gasket Leak, Bad Transfer Case (hard to engage/disengage), Rough Idle w/Frequent Stalling, Rough Running with Frequent CE Light, Wrong Radiator (1.02"), and Bad Injectors. My truck then on lease for only 8 months was spending a great deal of it's time in the shop, at least once a month since I drove it away. Over the course of 9 service visits none of the problems had been successfully dealt with. I went through the ford procedural BS, meeting with the area rep, etc. The area rep was an arrogant SOB who came straight out and asked me "It's only a leased vehicle, what do you want". I replied that I wanted to continue my lease in another identical/comparable truck. His response was "you don't own the truck, why are you worried about its reliability". He didn't seem to be too concerned with the inconvenience the service trips were causing.
After getting nowhere with him, nor with anyone at Ford HQ, I turned to a local TV station with whom I have contacts with (I also work in TV). The next day a camera crew showed up and allowed me to tell my story. To my surprise, it wasn't treated as a consumer interest story at all, it was treated as a local headline story being carried within the first 10 minutes of the 6pm newscast and repeated again during the 11pm news.
The next day I had a call from the owner of the leasing dealer, I had a $4k check from Ford good towards a new truck. An almost happy ending for me, but I was hoping for more (I had about $9k into the lease at that time). The media can work for you, don't be afraid to ask. For anyone who wants to see my story, I believe somewhere I have the 2 minute windows media clip lying around.
