Haynes or Chiltons?
Haynes or Chiltons?
Which is a better general maintenance manual?
Or neither?
I have heard Chiltons manuals are to broad and
not specific. cover too many models.
If you want to know about just your particular
truck, what should toy get.
Ford tech manuals?

I went the route of the Ford Manual on CDROM.
So far this seems to be good, don't have a complaint to date.
?I got mine from Helm Inc, but I saw lots of peoplel get them from ebay for considerably less.

One vote for Haynes
I suppose to some extent it depends on your background. I'm a web developer and not gifted with a wealth of automotive knowledge, and am semi-mechanically inclined. I have learned a great deal from the Haynes manuals. They are very specific, organized by task or repair, and have lots of good photographs. And for $15, they are excellent even if you never repaired the vehicle, but just used it to educate yourself.
I'm waiting for Haynes to update theirs for 2000, but at this point I might as well get the 97-99 version.

Last I heard Haynes bought Chilton's, or the other way around. I presume soon enough they will eliminate one of the manuals.
The way I found out is that I called I think Chilton's, and they answered Haynes....I was like WTF....They said we recently bought them out....

Item # 1848684991
On ebay.com
Shouldn’t cost that much. It’s at 9.99 right now.

I bought Ford factory manuals on ebay and also a chiltons. The chiltons contains the same info as in the factory manuals, just a lot less of it and for a lot more years. The factory manuals are very specific for your year. Also, the manuals are explanitory on how a particilar system works, not just the dissasembly/assembly procedures. Most people can turn nuts, but its very advantageous to know how the system works, not just how it comes apart. They are readily available on ebay, and be patient, there are pleanty out there. They usually go for about $30 per book. My '89 is a 3 part volume and I paid almost $100 for the set, but I've seen them go cheaper. I dunno, maybe I paid too much, but they are very informative.
