Cool K&N FIPK . . . really sucks . . . !

Just installed the K&N FIPK yesterday . . . drove it about 20 miles so I can't make any comments about increased performance yet . . . but, what I can say is that this thing really "sucks" . . . makes the engine sound like a V8 with a 4-barrel . . . the woosh at WOT reminds me of days gone by, and it even sounds good at idle!

But, I did notice a very sharp drop in speed when I let up on the throttle . . . !

Any experience with this . . . ?

I think this is the common experience on these FIPK's (at least with K&N). I had the exact experience and was pleasantly surprised!
I thought that I might have done something wrong and posted the question. The responses were showing the same 4bbl WOT sound.

swamp, my K&N does the same thing... sometimes... sometimes its a good whoosh, sometimes its enough to bug the **** out of you, because it sounds like something is wrong with it... Although now that I have all the bolts tightened down I hope I got it figured out (see the thread in other aftermarket titled "K&N FIPK Owners - check your bolts!"

Make sure you change your oil fequently because that K&N is going to let more and bigger dirt particles into your engine.

Not true about FIPK allowing "more and bigger dirt particles into your engine". I work in Death Valley and on occasion do desert running with my truck. This involves driving 10-15 miles at 40-50mph behind other trucks and a dust cloud so bad that at times you lose site of the truck in front of you. We run maybe 30 feet apart. This is very fine desert dust and sand. The dust can be the consitancy baking flower. Everytime I do this I check my FIPK filter. The outside looks like someone dropped a huge bag of dust right on the filter. I take the filter off to check the inside and cannot believe that it is a clean as the day I put it on. I mean not even one sign of any dust or dirt. Just the clean pink filter from the oil in the filter. They are really that good. A properly maintained and oiled filter will not let in any dirt or dust at all. I just clean the filter after each of these trips to get the exterior dirt off, apply a little oil, and put it back on.

Instead of removing and cleaning you K&N every time you ride in the desert, you may want to consider using a pre-filter from Outerwears. Then you could just pull it off for normal driving.

Have to agree with with Ron on that. I've had the K&N on most of my vehicles (dirt and street bikes, trucks and cars) and experience nothing but dirty outside, clean inside.

swampview yea, I noticed a drop in my mpg as well. It is a technical problem: the right foot is physically attached to the good sounding sensor of the ear. The ear hears something good and the right foot reacts.
I know it's hard to understand in words, so, you'll just have to trust me on this...

I have had the K&N for 3 years now and just cleaned it the other day. Everything right up to the throttle body was clean. Don't let the skeptics scare ya, K&N is the best in my opinion. BTW resetting your computer might show you the performance difference.

Does the Airaid or the Airforce1 make the smae sound. I hope so. I plan on getting a FIPK soon but, I like the looks of the Airaid or AF! vs the K&N.

A visual inspection of the inside of the filter is not necessarily adequate to guage the effectiveness of its filtering. If you really want to know how much foriegn material is getting into your engine, have an oil analysis done after some desert driving. Have them check for the silica content. I think you may be quite surprised to find the levels quite high. This is basically extrememly fine sand that is getting in. I like K&N's myself, they work great on my Harley and short tracker but I would think twice about putting one on a daily driver truck that sees a lot of dirty air.

it's not the stuff you can see that will be producing the wear scars on your engine internals . . unless you can see down to 5 microns . . there are posts explaining how the K&N filters allow the minute particles through . . . not flaming anyone or their truck . . . just saying, change your oil and use the best oil filter you can find . .

How easy would it be to install K&N FIPK? I'm not a complete idiot around most tools, but generally not too comfortable around cars. From what I can see, installation requires some work in tight quarters. Is there anything I should look out for?
