Some answers about oil analysis

I have a 98 5.4L that now has 39K on it. I bought it new and changed to Mobil 1 5W-30 at 1000 miles. I am NOT trying to start a debate on synthetic vs conventional oil. The truck has always used maybe 1/2 at oil 5000 miles changes. I am now at 4000 miles, and it was 3/4 qt low. If I run some conventional oil for 3000 miles, will that seat the rings, etc and reduce/eliminate my oil usage? Is it too late?

Stick with the Mobil 1 for a while and see if it goes down. The mobil 1 might be cleaning some of the conventional out of your engine. Probably in the form of blow by!
After running mobil for 10,000 to 15,000 miles you should see the usage drop!

JSCOTT,
If i understand you correct, you changed your oil to Mobil-1 after only 1000 miles on a brand new engine. And you have been running Mobil-1 ever since. Being down 3/4 qt in 4000 miles as compared to 1/2 qt in 5000 miles is not that much to worry about. Driving styles, higher reving (more Fwy) miles might add to some increased oil usage. Driving around town and idleing more can introduce more fuel into the engine. If you go short trips and then go on a longer trip (fwy) then some of the fuel will burn off causing some of the oil to burn off with it. So, different types of driving will cause different amounts of oil burning. I don't think that the Mobil-1 has anything to do with it. Just keep doing what you're doing and if it gets worse then you can be worried.

Just test drove the Dodge (med size) with the 4.7L overhead cam engine. WOW! The salesman let me try full power. It darn near burnt the rubber off the tires, fishtailed all over the road. Needless to say I was impressed. I tested the quad cab. This is the one that I might buy.
Yes I have a few test data on 10w-30 oils. e-mail me and I'll give you what I have.
As for the change in oil in your 89 Camery The Havoline Formula 3 is the better choice.
Sincerely, Kevin</font>

Don't feel bad Oil Man, I had to choose between the SuperCrew and the Quad Cab Dakota with a 4.7, Dodge just did not have the ABS on the lot, Ford did so I drive a Ford, my friend has a 1999 Dakota RT (5.9) he is having a blast driving his, he has done some mods and get 17 MPG freeway (better than my 16 MPG).
Thanks for your oil recomendations, I can only find regular Havoline, no Havoline Fromula 3, my other choise is conventional Mobil 10w-30 or Valvoline 10w-30.

Thanks for the info Oil Man!
When I get my truck I will probably run Mobil 1 in it. I know the military has begun oil analysis on most of it's vehicle fleet instead of just changing at a nominal # of miles. It has saved huge amounts of money across the military because even if the oil looks bad sometimes the analysis comes back good and they can run at longer intervals even with conventional oil.

Hi Oil Man,
You and MSparks have helped me make decisions
and I've bought this oil:
SERIES 2000 - SAE 0W-30 Synthetic Motor Oil
Any wear ratings on this oil?
Have never used a 0 weight oil, but Ford
is recommending 0-20 in their new trucks
and it gets mighty hot here in S.CAl (as
you well KNOW!)...
So, S.Clarita, up there alot...
about to buy a new truck (for the wife)...
what did you end up with???
