ivisscannibis,
To compare the Motorcraft oil to the Mobil-1 would not even be a comparison. The mobil-1 has a wear # of (12) and an oxidation resistance of (509). The Motorcraft oil Failed the wear test and only had an oxidation resistance of (207). The Mobil-1 is much better than the Motorcraft oil.

Sincerely, Kevin

I'm not oil man, but I believe if your going to change your oil every 3k miles, then The Quaker state and Texaco havoline both had good low wear numbers and pretty decent (high) oxidation resistance numbers.

On my old 89' Ranger I have over 200k miles using havoline 3, changed at 3k intervals.

In my SuperDuty, I'm going with Amsoil synthetic, and plan to change the oil at 16k intervals (1 year), while replacing the oil filter every 3k.
I'll switch back to Havoline 3 if the oil analysis on the Amsoil has any 'suprises'.

lilranger,
R Bess is just about right. The Quaker State and the Havoline Formula 3 do have low wear rates, but not quite high oxidation numbers. The Quaker State has kinda low oxidation resistance and the Havoline F-3 has higher but still only average. R Bess is right if you are going to change your oil at 3,000 intervals then they will be fine. Mobil-1 and Lubrication Engineers #8530 are much better oils however both of them cost more than the QS and H-F-3. Your pocket book, your truck, your choice. It's America.

Sincerely, Kevin

lilranger,
I do not recommend using these kinds of products like Duralube. They have Chlorinated paraffins in them that turn into Hydrochloric Acid in the presense of water (condinsation) and heat. Many studies have been done and they all have come to the same conclusion. Although the products that use the chlorinated paraffins look great when demonstrated with the type of dog and pony test like the torque wrench one, by not seizing up. However this test is only one type and does not show the wear that comes from the chlorinated paraffins after it turns into hydrochloric acid. This hydrochloric acid will eat the light metals in your engine (bearings). I've seen pictures in the Lubes and Greases magazine that show how much lead is eaten out of the gearings.

I do not us these products and you should not have to if you are using a high quality oil.

Sincerely, Kevin

Question

Oil Man
Thanks for sharing your oil knowledge!

Now, do you have any data on the new Motorcraft and Mobil Drive Clean 5W-20 Oils ?

Ford and Honda both spec 5W-20 oils ?

Also what do you drive ?

Thanks again.

2001supercrew-,
No I do not have any info on the two 5w-20 oils you asked about they are still too new.

As for what truck I drive --- That's a sore subject. I got divorced and no longer have any truck. I'll be shopping next year for a new one. Don't know which one yet.

Oil Man
Are you still with us, did you buy a GMC or Dodge truck ?

Do you have any oil wear and oxidation protection data for 10-30 oils ?.

Current family car oils:
1995 Camary - Mobil-1, Synthetic, 5w-30
1989 Camary - Castrol GTX, 10w-40
2001 SuperCrew - 5w-20 Motrocraft - (will change to synthetic, 5w-20 as soon as Mobil or ? have one on the market)
I would like to change the 89 Camary to convetional 10w-30, Mobil, Valvoline or Havoline formula 3.

Oil Man,
Your are what these message boards are all about. I applaud you and your willingness to share your "valuable" knowledge.
I believe, if my Ford dealer follows my owner's manual, that the oil in my truck is Motorcraft SAE 5W30 Super Premium. Did I just read that this oil didn't pass the wear test ?
I have 9214 miles on my truck (5.4L, 2000 4X4). I guess I should switch oils... right?
I do 12000 miles a year, city driving mostly (boy that 4X4 comes in handy). I change my oil every 3000 miles, what do you suggest?
Cost is not a concern. I'm cheap so I'll pay more now to save even more later. Does Mobil 1 sound good?

Ford drivers Oil Man has his heart set on a Dodge so I'll ask you guys (and Gals) this next question. Will changing my oil to Mobil 1void my warranty?
Thanks everyone,

2001supercrew-new,
Just test drove the Dodge (med size) with the 4.7L overhead cam engine. WOW! The salesman let me try full power. It darn near burnt the rubber off the tires, fishtailed all over the road. Needless to say I was impressed. I tested the quad cab. This is the one that I might buy.

Yes I have a few test data on 10w-30 oils. e-mail me and I'll give you what I have.

As for the change in oil in your 89 Camery The Havoline Formula 3 is the better choice.

Sincerely, Kevin

Mobil-1 is a great choice and is very easy to get. Lubrication Engineers 8530 5w-30 is also a great oil with less wear than the Mobil-1, however it's a little harder to get. If you are interested in the LE oil just e-mail me.
