Question Which Oil to Use

Hello,
I was just wondering which oil I should use for my next oil change. I have about 90 miles left until the next change so I need to start shopping for oil. I was leaning towards Mobil 1 but is this the best brand for the price, or is there another synthetic brand out there that is comparable? what do y'all recommend? Also the service man told me to use 5w-30, but the oil cap on the engine says 5w-20. I know nothing about the differences in oil, so any help would be great.

Thanks in advance,
Darren

I would highly recommend Amsoil if you are considering synthetic oil. By far the best in the industry, been around since the 70's, first fully synthetic oil, tested at the highest standards, the list goes on and on. This stuff is great!! Yes I am a dealer and no I am not trying to sell you because the only reason I am a dealer is so I can get the better pricing for myself. Only downpoint to amsoil is its somewhat difficult to buy, very few auto stores carry it. For $20 you can buy a franchise membership and get it at wholesale prices. Check out their website, www.amsoil.com you wont be dissapointed!

Big4X4 -- Do not use synthetic until you have atleast 15,000 miles on the truck. I have 61,000 & use Castrol 10W-30 because this is Texas and it gets hot. Most quick lubes will recommend 10W-30 anyway. Castrol is a good, clean oil. Whatever you do -- stay away from Penzoil.

You make a decent point here Lariat. First the reason most lube shops recommend using 10-30 still is because thats what they carry most of. When you see a special on a oil change/filter/lube its almost indefinetely for 10-30. Thats the only reasoning for that, sell what you have is there motto! Now, using synthetic from the get-go is just fine. It is important to stay away from extended drain intervals during break in because it is inevitable there will be metal fragments thrown. I would recommend synthetic from the start though, the sooner you run the better stuff the longer you will benefit form it and save the hassle of needing an engine flush. Personally I would stay away from extended drain intervals until 10k miles, this is when the engine is broken in by FoMoCo standards. If you do want to run synthetic from the beginning it might be worth doing extended intervals and doing more oil anylisis. These will tell you exactly when you need to change your oil. Food For Thought!

Realized my last statement sounded contridictary. What I meant to say: On the other hand xtended interval changes might be warranted from the begining. Do alot of oil anylisis at first to see how the oil is standing up. When it goes bad, change it! Havent ever done it this way personally but it would be interesting to see how the final product turns out!

Not that I am trying to start an arguement but what is wrong with Penzoil. They even make what some consider a very good synthetic oil(one person I know claims it is better than Mobil 1 and higher too). Just wondering what you may have heard or experienced with Penzoil?

First of all, I don't know anything about the Penzoil Synthetic oil, but the regular oil is made from a waxy base that will build up inside your engine over time. All good mechanics I know also say to stay away from Penzoil.

Sludging is prevented by, not caused by, the use of paraffinic oils. This type of base oil has advantages over the other types of mineral oil available, which is why they are used. Through dewaxing in the refinery and the addition of pour point depressants during blending any harmful effects of wax are eliminated or neutralized.

Howdy!

Use Prolong!! They say you don't need oil to run an engine with it. LOL. Anyone wanna try it?

Have a pro-short day.

Darren,

I do not want to sound ignorant but have you read the owners manual? It will recommend what viscosity oil to use. Your maintenance manual will recommend what interval to change it at according to your driving habbits. All other advice is free except that from ford. The price of it is included in the cost of your truck. When it comes time for warranty claims the written word prevails, that of the service man can change. You can change your oil sooner but never later than what the manual recommends.
As for synthetic vs conventional oils your truck will run fine on either oil. It may run better on synthetic and provide marginally better performance and milage but the cost is higher. Only you can decide if you want to pay more for that extra. All oils you decide to use must meet Fords minimum requirements, and they do, so take your pick. Personally I run synthetic oils in both differentials, tranny and T-case. I use conventional oil in the engine except when I go off road. Then I switch to synthetic till my next oil change.
