Question Synthetic or Regular Oil?

Just purchased a 02 F150 w/ 5.4 and auto. Used regular 10w40 with my 97 4.2 and ran fine at 75k until I sold it. Whats your opinion on Amsoil and the such? I am considering to try it out with my new truck. Does it void the Ford warranty? Thanks

Tis the question!

I use a product called Redline Synthetic Oil- in Benicia, california.

Better high temp. stability and longer drain intra. Bad news, price.

$7.75 per qt.

can change it ever 12,000- 18,000 mi.

Good poly-ester base stock.. can lubricate a modern jet engine!

It sold me!

amsoil is good too. ( 25,000 mi drain, half the price) not sure about quality though???

Oil is Oil, but synthetic is better!

I ASKED MY DEALER AND HE SAID, " IT DOESN"T VOID ANYTHING!"

Amsoil works as advertised,

if you are worried about warrenty you can use the Amsoil XL7500 oil. They even make it in 5w20 which is what your truck calls for.

If you want the best Amsoil's Series 2000 0w30 is a good choice. I have been using that in my truck for the last 3 years.

I do oil analysis and all of my analysis come back "good for continued use", even after 18 months without a change.

Good luck in your choice, there is lots of info on this site if you do a search.

Before I went to Amsoil, I used Mobil 1 and changed around 4000-5000 miles and 6000 miles once. I may go 10000 with Amsoil that's a 25000 miles drain interval. We'll see.

Additve chemistry is pretty close to Amsoil's XL7500. So my personal recommendation is that you could go 7500 miles no problem.

If you are doing majority of highway miles. 10,000 should be easy but after that I would recommend Oil analysis.

Though as a side note most european cars call for a 10K oil drain. Also the corvette with Mobil 1 has an oil drain of 15K.

I would say the most definate answer would be to do oil analysis at 5K intervals until the oil is 75-80% used up. Then you will have a safe 25% margin.

Let me know is you need analysis this would be a nice experiment to put on this board.

There are several places to get oil analysis. Some truck stops or Catapillar dealers sell them,

Most Amsoil dealers can get oil analysis for you.

The cost is between $10-25 or so per test.

Another company is Blackstone labs.

Amsoil is half the price of Royal Purple, guess again.................it's about $2 a quart cheaper.

Not everyone will see the results that Amsoil claims.. One result is you could end up spending more $$ and really get no benfit..

Even with using the 'extended' drain intervals you'll often spend more than if you just changed your oil every 3 to 5k with dino's..

Someone asked about the oil filter change interval.. If your using the factory recommended filter, it's still recommended to change this filter at the manufacturer recommended interval, no matter what type of oil your using.. Even the Amsoil's site admits this..
The oil you lose during the change has to be added back, at $5 a quart..

If your truck consumes a bit of oil, some trucks consume around a quart every 3 to 5k miles, which Ford calls normal.. Replacing that oil at $5 a quart adds up too..

If your paying $10 to $25 for an oil analysis every 5k miles, that costs more alone than if you just changed your oil..

I have no doubt of the quality of Amsoil. However the quality of the other major brands of dino oil is still high enough to let these engines last well over 200K miles..

So, just because you pay more for an oil, doesn't mean your actually getting any realized benifit..
Using Amsoil will not harm to your engine in any way, the only thing it might hurt is your wallet..

lreyes, it definitely will not void your warranty. I had my engine replaced at 35k after using 5w30 Mobil 1 synthetic b/c of a head gasket failure.

I change mine every 7500mi and I hope that works for me. Mostly highway driving here, but when I do go off-road I'm pretty hard on it.
