Mobil 1....how long between changes?
You guys are nutso.
With synthetic, you can go 15,000 miles easily. (Make sure you keep it within the marks on the dipstick as most cars will burn some oil.) Your truck will be perfect for at least 200,000 mile if you treat it this way. All the rest of this talk is kinda crazy. Talk about wasting oil and hurting the enviroment! Hahaha.

As I read through the thread I was glad to see some rational thought. I have a 98 F-150 that I use Mobil 1 in and a 99-BMW that specifies only BMW synthetic or Mobil 1. I change the oil in the truck every 5,000 PER THE OWNERS MANUAL (Unless you are doing severe duty as outlined in the maintenance book which is 3,000). The BMW has a computer that tells you when to change the oil and the first oil change came at 16,000.
Personal opinion is that changing oil every 3,000 miles, (unless doing severe duty) is just tossing money down a rathole and falling for an advertising slogan. The Mobil 1 web site says follow the owners manual recommendations.

Lucie and Harley are right. . .3,000 mile oil changes are a scam by the oil companies and a total waste of resources. REGULAR motor oil can easily go 5M miles. Synthetic can go farther; maybe 9M miles. Our BMW oil change computer calls for a change right around 9M. I'm not sure I buy into the 15M mile interval however. . . . how much contamiment can reasonably be suspended in the oil? Also, earlier comments by a gentleman talking about the type of trips you do are also right on. Short trips in cold weather is much harder on engine and oil.
You guys that are changing at 3k miles, are you saying you know more than Ford? The owners manual recommends 5k and thats with regular oil, with synthetic you can extend the interval if you want. In this case "being on the safe side" = "pissing money down the toilet...." At the very most change the filter at 3 and the oil every other time or something like that, more is just a waste of resources.
In my opinion going over 3000 miles with any oil is madnesS!

Contamination and depletion of the additives package start as soon as you pour it in the valve cover regardless if you have synthetic or dino oil. So what do you get for the price of synthetic... a lower viscosity index (less change in viscosity from change in temperature for cold starts with oil press) and improved oxidation resistance at high temperature. I want both!
I buy the best oil and filtres I can get. I have a 35000$ truck and Im going to quibble whether I spend 3$ or 6$ for a can of oil or filtre ?NOT I also run an oil cooler on my 4.6.
Mobil 1 is marketed under several names but I dont think they make oil filtres. I use the Purolator PURE-ONE >96% on multiple pass as better than 97 % single pass efficiency. Is the mobil filtre a puolator ? if not is it better, why and is there an equivalent because I have not seen them up here.
Interesting post, Is anyone here a member of Soc. of Tribologist and Lubrication Engineers, (STLE) Comments?

I had to comment on this...
I change my oil every 5000 miles per Fords recommendation. I use Mobil 1.
I sent my oil to Blackstone Labs (which I learned about here) and they not only rated everything excellent but told me the oil could have gone much further. I (in their judgement) changed it too soon.
I once again just had it changed again at 4850 miles. Not because I think it needed it, only because I'm concerned with the warrenty requirement or risk loosing coverage if there is a major engine failure.
Consumers ran tests on taxis in New York and found no difference in the wear of an engine over its life time with 3000 mile changes and 12000 mile changes.
I think alot of this 3000 mile hoopla was started by the oil manufacturers and not the people who build the cars.
So I'll go ahead and use Mobil 1 and change every 5000.
Just my own thought---Bob

The vehicle above is one of many. Try refreshing. It goes by random but the Expy was exactly like mine. Now it's a
2000 EB Expedition 5.4L, Estate Green with all the perks,3.55 LS,Heated and Signal Mirrors and Seats Moon Roof. Auto adjusting peddles, seats, and mirrors. Rhino Step Bar (coming), Ford Bug Shield,Even the hitch propeller, More to come... My 99 Expy was destroyed in a Wisconsin Tornado (No B.S.) Allstate did good by me but I still took a hit on mileage.

01 please don't crack up but Ive got to respond. Miles are only part of the decision on when to change oil.
Page 161 of my manual says 3000 miles for the caveat 'severe duty schedule'which my (most)truck(s) runs. Water contamination in oil and resultant acids that form in engines from incomplete warmup in short trip operation are bad news. Water and lead, tin, zinc in oil analysis all go up under these conditions. There was two threads a while back about white sludge - a.k.a. "Water" under the oil filler cap. This is probably the best indicator to change oil regardless of miles.
If youre going to drive for 45 mins each time you start up, run down the highway without a load or trailer, and not start in subzero weather then knock yourself out with 5000 mile + oilchanges and save $$$. To each his own depending on how you drive. Police forces taxis and fleets typically run on 3000 mile schedule only unless its qualified with oil analysis on a trend basis.
Since I do my own oil I figure I'll put the savings into premium products on a more frequent basis. It has nothing to do with outsmarting the tribologists at Ford. In fact, its a life .vs. contamination curve and Ford only gives two data points on the curve in the manual.
Another note on Ford's jounalism... there is no note of a modified oil change interval in the manual if your engine has the optional oil cooler/ warmer. The guys at Long Corp who make OEM oil coolers for Ford, GM, BMW etc are busy designing oil coolers for these vehicles as standard equipment so as manufacturers can post even longer oil change intervals in new models.
Question???? Does anyone know if there is a longer can version of the filtre available for those of us who have the remote filtre?

these trucks are expensive.....why quibble over $3-$4 when your truck is worth
35,000?......
multiply that thinking by the millions of people who practice this and it'scary.
our trucks are not going to die from infrequent oil changes people...the paint
will go, the interior will be gone...the tranny will definitely say bye,bye and rust
will eat it way before the motor goes from
inpurities in the oil.
you know the tranny will go at 120k-150k for sure....

I have an uncle that works for Mobile. He is in charge of the labs were they test there oil. He has told me that after performing test on Mobile 1 oil that has been run for 10000 the oil had not shown any signs of breaking down. He suggested however to go ahead and change the oil at 10000 even though its not worn out, due to contamination. If your worried about your oil lasting that long you could always change the filter at 5k and a complete oil change at 10k.

This cracks me up, add another two names to the list of those who think they know more than the people who build the trucks
Let me say this just once more for those special few....
YOUR OWNERS MANUAL SAYS 5000 MILE OIL CHANGE INTERVAL!!
Did you get that? Or do you still think you know more than Ford?
