swapping a 4.2 V-6 for a 4.6 V-8
I am interested in upgrading my 4.2 V-6, for a 4.6 TRITON V-8. I am having trouble getting straight answers, and actually finding the engine for sale.Currently, my 4.2 V-6,has a manual transmission, and I heard that I could just bolt the TRITON to the transmission, PLEASE HELP ME!!!!!!!!!!!
You would go through all the trouble of changing your engine for the 4.6 which only has 15 more HP than the 4.2? autoperformance.net 's vortech supercharger would give you almost 75 more horse power than a 4.6. Just thought you would like know.

Did you ever think he probably wants that nice V-8 sound too? Go for it! There's nothing like a V-8! Even though it will have only a little more H.P. than the six, you will notice a lot more torque, and it sounds a h*ll of a lot better than a 6. Don't get me wrong, the 6 is a great engine, but the 8 is a better package.
mtrujillo,
Yes they should bolt up. Things to look out for. The Engine mounts and rad hose might be different. You will need the PCM from 4.6,possibly engine harness too. Throttle/cruise cable could be different. Will you be using a 97-99 or a newer 4.6? As you have to change the PCM & harness why not get a 5.4? Of coarse the 5.4 will destroy your tranny & differential but what the hey.
Have you tried salvage yards?

Buy a Lightning engine.. strap that into your truck, don't tell anyone that it's in there, then go out racing and smoke everyone... haha!

Your best bet to find the engine is a auto recycler. I switched a 302 into my 84 F150 in place of a 300. Calif smog laws require that everything from the radiator to the tailpipe be from that year engine or available that year. I found Santa Clara Truck Recyclers who guaranteed that the set up would pass through the referee. 3k for everything ( minus the trans and transfer cases I already had]Every thing worked as promised, no problems. My .02 issell your old rig and buy a truck with the engine and trans that you want.Your state may not have strict smog like CA or you may love your current truck but for the money and the hassle it just isn't worth the trouble. Every thing should bolt right up.
Thank you everyone for the information.I am
currently still on the market for a 4.6,I have found two in E-Bay, but I would like to
find one locally.Again, my reasoning for the swap is that my 4.2 manual sounds like its going to take a crap when Im getting on the highway.I sometimes have to exceeed 3,000
rpm WITH A K&N AIRFILTER!!! Not Cool Man!!!

Has anyone actually done this swap? I wanted to do the same thing because of things like sound, torque, upgradability, etc. Has anyone done this switch and have an approximate cost? Also, was it worth it??

Unless you have a buyer for your 4.2, it might be cheaper to sell your truck and buy one with a 4.6.

How hard could it be? I swapped my 4.3 with a 305 in my old S-10. It was basically a 2 person 10 hour job (translation 24 beer job). That was an automatic as well, along with switching the rear-end to 3.73's. Good luck, and keep us informed bud.

Sounds like some good help from these guys. Just to add a few ideas. I would search for a F150 with a 4.6 in the junk yard. This way you could buy what you need and not miss anything. This way you could sit on your garage floor and do any preparations before you do the actual swap. I would pull the heads and see what condition the motor is in.
Either way it would be cheaper if you bought a package deal from the junk yard, as in PCM and all the wiring, hoses, brackets, mounts, etc. Most important you would know that you got everything you would probably need. Good luck.

If you're ever in Oxford or I'm in Jackson, we'll mix our trucks up. Same year, colors, add-on's, etc. Don't ya' love it !
Word of advice.
Take a camera and take photos of the 4.6 and wiring before you remove anything.
That and label everything with little tags while removing. honestly I don't see the problem. Thought about it myself. But thinking I'll wait and see if they come out with the V-6 diesel in 2003
