Ford admits Quality problem on 5.4's
Don't be fooled Morrison the 4.6 has the same problem. It may not be as widespread as the 5.4 but it exist. My 99 leaking oil out of the passenger side head gasket at 35K. When I was talking to my dealer they had a Crown Vic in there with the same problem. Worst problem they don't seem to have a clue on how to fix it or control it. They're people with 2001 complaining of the same problem and some people have had there trucks back for two or three times.
I'm trying to get Ford to give me free extended warranty for my truck. After hearing they were going to take my truck half apart (They actual take the body off the frame!) there just to many things to go wrong and there 12 month /12,000 warranty only covers the repair. So if AC goes because they screwed up something you may be S.O.L.
Check this other string for more info.

Of course someone doing 55 on flat land on the highway will get better than someone with a heavy foot in the city.
Don't make claims "my Chevy is better than your Ford" without divulging all of the facts. When the Ford guys speak of fuel economy, we generally speak of the worst case scenario, not the best.

Yes it does imply something about us Ford owners. It implys us Ford owners do what we know is right regardless of what friends, co-workers, family etc may say or think, it also implys we are much brighter then the Chevy guys. We buy and own Fords. See these Chevy guys are "in the closet" as in like peer pressure, if there buddies own Chevys its as if some of them who would rather own a FORD, knowing its a much better truck then Chevy could ever dream of, just can't bring themselfs to actual go buy one instead of owning a Chevy. So that's what I met by "coming out of the closet"
I have a good friend at work who owns a Chevy, always trying to give me a hard time about Fords. It sure was funny last week when his new truck blew a transmisson. I told him if he really wants a truck he can trust but cant come out of the closet then he could at least put a FORD motor in it (lol)
Anyway I will say this I do think Chevy guys are closer to their trucks then us FORD guys. When we get out of our trucks, turn the lights off for the night we have to leave it there, all of it. The Chevy guys when they get out of their trucks, turn the lights off and the damn light switch falls off in their hand they take it inside with them.

Had my 99 F150, 5.4 in the dealer Jan. 01 for oil leak. The truck was out of warranty (42000 miles), they replaced the head gasket with a goodwill adjustment. I had to pay $150. The truck is back in the shop for the same reason (63000 miles). The dealer and Ford originally wanted me to pay. They said it was out of warranty, and the last repair was over 12000 miles ago. I told the service manager that I had been a good customer, I had purchased 3 vehicles there in the last 4 years, and all of the regular maintenance was done at the dealership. I also told him that I had an 03 cobra on order. The service manager called me 5 mins. later and said they would fix it at no cost.
I have heard people say "recall" with regards to Fords public admission of a problem. Has anyone actually seen a recall?
I am concerned about it happening again, when i'm not buying a new car from the dealer.

I thought this '99 5.4 leak thing was well-documented--here, at least. From what I recall the problem occurs on the rear of the passenger side of the engine. It involved engines built early in the '99 model year, like from july-sept '98.

Where did the information you have regarding the dates of July through September 98 came from. I'm really hopeing you are right, my 5.4 has a build date of 12-07-98, so far no problems.
In response to all of the Chevy bashing. I own an F150, why because I like the truck. I have driven many Chevy's and enjoyed them very much also. As for the 5.3 vs. the 5.4 - I have seen far more problems with the 5.4 than the 5.3. The 5.3 also idles smoother, gets better mileage and has a much smoother shifting transmission. The Ford Interior is better in my opinion than the Chevy, but all of the engine problems on $25K - $30K trucks is just plain wrong. Then they want to give a reman engine to fix the problem, yea!!!!!!!
Oh, just for reference .... GM sold more trucks in 2001 than Ford. First time in a long time, but it may be indicating a new trend?
OK, Keep bashing.

just a quick note. The Chebie 5.3 is a brand new engine which is not tried and true yet all old references to the bowtie trucks are for the wonderfull 350. The new OHC 5.3 is having problems of it's own including PISTON SLAP!!! Go to a chevy board just like these guys come to our board and you will see they have tons of problems too!
It is a very small quantity of 5.4's that leak compared to how many are out there! (5000 would be a very small number for instance)
Has anyone started a thread asking how many of us don't have the leaks?
good luck!

The Piston slap that Chevy is having is on the 6.0L. These engines are related (like the 4.6 / 5.4) but the issue is with psiton slap is on the 6.0L.
I agree, the issue is on a small # of trucks (although much higher the the 5000 units you quoted). Still, the big issue is, that Ford wants to give a reman motor and have the dealers honk the customer around. There are some good dealers out there, but I would not want most of them even touching my truck for a complete engine change. How many smaller jobs get messed up by the dealers? Too many for me to want them changing my engine.
Before I bought my Supercrew. I drove an Aerostar. Was quite satisfied.
My daily driver was an 85 T-Bird. Used/leaked no oil. wasn't pretty. But ran and ran. Tough car. Bought an XL sport for myself. The SCrew is family vehicle. I have full faith these are good trucks. I have owned 13 vehicles by most of them. I find it interesting that most of the postings on this website are to bitch...bitch...bitch!!!
But then again..I'm complaining.

Not here to flame or get flamed, as I do own a Chevy, just to give some objective data. The very best gas milage I have ever gotten in my truck (reg cab short bed 5.3 w/3.73) was just a hair over 19 mpg with about 90% highway (@ 80mph) with the rest being 40 to 50 on side roads and very little idling (no stops, just rolling through stop signs mostly)
The very worst milage has been low 15' s and thats driving like a bat outa hell!

Fastdew,
I know you werent referencing the 350!(5.7) I was! I am sorry for my miss information I thought the 5.3 was an OHC.
However I have read on the chevy sites that the 5.3's were slapping among other things.
I am not trying to flame chevy as I have owned a few in my day, I was just trying to make the point that all brands (Including my sisters 02 lexus) have some sort of issue that is published but only represents a small number of the vehicles actually built and sold.
the 5000 I quoted was just a forinstance. If you read the MAJORITY of vehicle recalls the numbers are usally very low compared to the built and sold numbers.

Don't get me wrong, I know that Chevy was trying to actualy change only the pistons in the field on there slappers? What is up with that?
I believe that these companies (Ford, GM, Dodge, etc.) unfortunately use bean counters not thier customer service people to decide which is the best way to handle a recall/repair. Hence we get an FQR instead of something new like we should!
We must (Which most of us don't!) look at the big picture of how these companies make decisions.
Take it easy-
