yeah i dont beleive it either. both the ford and chevy (5.4, 5.3) window stickers for gas mileage are the same 14/17. i think anyone claiming to get more than 17mpg with either of these engines is not telling the truth or not figuring gas mileage right. ive owned 6 brand new vehicles in the past 7 years and every vehicle got pretty much exactly what the window sticker says for gas mileage. i generally check my mileage everytime i fill up and some of the vehicles ive had figure mileage out automatically (like my grandprix)

21.5MPG

Can anyone back up his claim to 21.5 MPG? I know they get better than Ford, but that sounds a little exagerated to me. My wifes Maxima does not get much better than that around town. Just wondering if my leg is being pulled.

No offense to the people here, but I never believe any gas mileage numbers posted here or anywhere on the web. The only way I will believe them is when I see the odometer numbers and gallons bought in a chart that represents many tankfulls. Sure they could be faked, but most people wouldn't bother. Amazingly, none of these 21+ MPG with a 5.4l (or 5.3 for that matter) guys ever post that stuff. I personally don't think you can get the wildist notion of gas mileage without running at least three tanks through. It all has to be averaged to make any sense. Diffrent pumps shut off diffrent, and that alone can account for over a gallon of fuel across two fills.

I will say my average MPG numbers from over 30 tanks on my 4.2l F150 compared to several logs of mileage over nearly as many tanks (w /odo numbers) for 5.4s I found on the web helped my decision to buy a 5.4l this time.

BTW, not one of those logs showed over 17 MPG average. My 8 tank average is at about 16 MPG on my new 5.4l. At least I knew what I was getting into.

I averaged 16.8 MPG over 30 tanks with my 4.2l., so I didn't lose much.

Cool

You asked for confirmation on my gas mileage and so far I count 2 that back me up.
I would like to add that this was also a rough estimate on highway and that I did get better then that at times going thru Ohio flat lands. I get 20.21mpg to be exact in the city with my 5.3. Again my condolences that you don’t get better gas mileage. I wish there was something I could do for you.

COACH:

Ok everyone, COACH may be right. I don't think anybody has asked him the proper question so here goes.

COACH what kind of gas mileage do you actually get when not being pulled, pushed or towed by a FORD?

COACH has proven himself to be a very smart man. Why? you may ask, because he hangs out with people who "really" know the correct answers. If he wanted to get BS answers he'd be hanging out at them poor CHEVY web sites.

He may own a CHEVY, poor guy, but his heart is in the right place "FORD forums" because his true desire is to own a FORD. Someday he will see his errors and "come out" of the closet.

I have got better than 22mpg and as bad as 14mpg with my truck. Does this mean that all the 4.6's will get the same? NO!
One persons mpg experiance is not a representation of all the trucks. There are way too many variables for it to be that cut and dry. Hey great is your 5.3 gets great gas mileage. Not all of them will. That said not all the 5.4's will exhibit the same mpg either. I think my grandmother could get 21mpg with the 5.4.

No need to feel sorry for anyone here. We are PROUD to own Ford trucks!
If mpg was the deciding factor I would have bought a three cylinder, two door Spec!

I rather enjoy burning a tank of gas!

um ... that's implying something about us Ford owners there. I'd rather you not say things like that, if you could. Thanks and gig'em

Hey Guys!

I thought this '99 5.4 leak thing was well-documented--here, at least. From what I recall the problem occurs on the rear of the passenger side of the engine. It involved engines built early in the '99 model year, like from july-sept '98.

I know I looked at a '99 when shopping for mine. It had a engine built something like 6 months AFTER the truck was built! You know what that means! yup replacement, at least a factory-fresh engine.

I also looked at another '99 that had an engine from the affected date..I didnt walk from that one I RAN!!

The 5.4 in my baby is about as purrrrrrrfect as you can get--Happy I bought it.

It seems that some people here are applying faulty logic to their criticism of MPG claims. Why would someone post on a website inflated mileage figures? In my case, I OWN a Ford. Why would I try to make my Ford look bad on purpose?
My dad is a professional hunter and travels extensively in his pickups. He goes to North Dakota and Arizona several times a year for bird hunting and puts around 50,000 miles a year on his trucks and I think that he would know what kind of mileage he's getting.
Also, the claim that two completely different motors by different manufacturers cannot get different fuel economy figures is ignorant at best.
How about the GM 305 and the Ford 302? I got low 20's on the highway with my `85 CV 302, and my uncle's Caprice with the 305 got around 17. Similarly sized motor/vehicle but different fuel efficiency.
You can be a Ford fan, but don't be one to the point of making yourself look ignorant.

Who made that claim? Just about everyone would agree the Silverado gets slightly better gas milage. (As mentioned earlier, most publications have found it to average out around 1 mpg better, perhaps due to it's lack of low end power.) And I completely agree you can't make judgements based on one single tank of gas as mentioned. There are plenty of us on this site with the same truck and the same engine with as much as 5+ miles per gallon difference due to different setups such as lifts, tires, towing, and driving habits. But if you compare apples to apples and look at the average over several tanks, I can all but assure you you're not going to average 7 miles per gallon more than you would of with the Ford. Period...

Question $4500???

The report says Ford is spending $4500 per truck to pop in a new engine...I wish I could get a factory new engine installed by factory techs for $4500!!!...is that US dollars or Ford dollars?

Every auto manufacturer in the world has recalls and problems like this, but Ford sells so many vehicles it's front page news when it happens.

What I want to know from Ford is the exact cause of these oil leaks?...is it poor machining of the block deck?..crappy gasket...bad head bolts?...what?? Why the 5.4 and not the 4.6?

In any case, fortunate to be watching from the sidelines...I've got the 4.6

I did about as much research on this prior to my purchase as I thought nessesary, I hope. I bought a used 99 Expy w/ the 5.4L, 8/99 build date and was sure I would be ok.

Well, Had her for 5k so far, I am at 28k (knocking on wood. . . lol) no signs of leaks, slap or anything else. just good smooth power.

Ford made/sold many hundreds of thousands of these motors. That a small (less then 1%?) percentage of them had problems is nothing new to any manufacturer. Multiply that 1% by the many hundreds of thousands and you get a couple thousand very dissapointed owners who, rightfully so, seek remedy. For the most part they seem to be getting taken care of.

BTW, I have run 32 fill-ups to date and have so far averaged 14.47 MPG overall. My "Best" tank to date is 16.5, my "worst" is 13.2 MPG.

AND I drive, as y'all say, "like I stole it." Mountains, hills, flat lands & some times towing, always fast as traffic allows, often (75+ mph) 99 Expy XLT 5.4L, 3.73 LS w/ Heavy Foot
