Post Airbx Mods is the FIPK really the best?

Instead of going with the FIPK setup, purchased or homemade like in the tech articles, what about leaving the current air box and using a drop in K&N? I don't own an F150 yet, but i have a SHO. You can get a similar FIPK/Cone K&N setup for it, but it was found that removing the cone and silencer box in the wheel well, it actually performs better becuase you are sucking up fresh cool air rather that hot air in the engine compartment. Could something similar to this be done the the F150?
Thanks!
