Question about older engines
Hello,
I must admit, I'm a dyed in the wool GM guy, so I don't know a whole lot about Ford engines, but am considering buying a mid 60s to late 70s Ford truck. (I've helped many friends work on their 289 and 302s, but big block Fords are relatively foreign to me.) What I'd like to know is what are the horsepower/torque numbers for these vehicles. I've test driven some with the 390 and 400. Both engines felt very torquey. If anyone has a information for the 302, 351, 360, 390, and 400; it would be much appreciated. Also, if there are any engines I should try to stay away from due to problems, please let me know.
Thanks,
Chris

Hi & Welcome!
At one time or another, I've owned most of those engines in a truck. Don't know any of the power numbers, though.
The 302 is good, but underpowered in stock form. That's OK, because there are tons and tons of aftermarket performance parts for it.
The 351 seems to have more power, but drinks like a big-block. I had a '72 F150 with a Cleveland 2bbl (stock) that would outrun early 80's model stock camaros. Engine & tranny were out of a '74 Ranchero. Man, did that thing run!
The 390 was a massive gas-hog, but would pull just about anything and never break a sweat. Loaded or not, 8mpg even after the 4bbl was installed.
Never had any big problems with any of them except trying to keep them fed.
As this site "concentrates" on '97 and newer, you may want to ask this at www.ford-trucks.com They are more focused on the older trucks.
