extended crank on f-150
I have the 2001 supercrew. I just had my 4th visit to the dealer for extended crank and puff of smoke when it does start.
The first 2 times they said they couldn't duplicate the problem.
The third time I made a video tape of my engine and the smoking.
They kept the truck for 4 days and they said couldn't duplicate the problem. Finally they had a ford enginner come down to look at my truck, and after viewing the tape and examining the truck he said the smokink and not starting is normal.
My lawyer doesn't think so.
I didn't know I had to ask for a non-smoking truck.

The smoke is white. It does smoke every time that I start it.
I have a video tape full of it.
I had the truck for 6 months before the paint on the rear door peeled off and there was rust under the paint. No sign of primer waht so ever. They tried to tell me that I spilled something on it.
They ended up painting it.
I have so much problem with this truck in 16 months that I can make a big bowl of lemonade with it.

Sounds to me like a dealer demonstrator that was in an accident and "covered up".
Lemon.
A friend of mine bought a 90' Chrysler Laser RS turbo as-new but it was a dealer demo car. Turns out it had been rear-ended and the paint was peeling on the rear hatch lid. Lemon.
Some dealers do the repairs themselves and don't report it to insurance I think.

Well holy ****! Finally someone with the same damn problem. My 2000 F150 XLT Sport 4x2 5.4l is doing the same thing without the smoke though. After the temperatures here in Vegas hit 70 degrees the problem started back up again. Ford has had the truck 5 different times for over a week at one time and can't duplicate the problem. They haven't told me that this problem is normal however they can't duplicate it so they can't fix it. I believe the problem is related to a module in the ignition mapping system related to temperature. The smoke most likely is from the fuel pump forcing too much fuel into the ignition chamber. Please let me know if you are able to figure the problem out. Ford has already replaced my battery once so they do know that something is going on.

I would be really interested to see the results of a fuel pressure test. Not just a throw the gauge on it kind, but a leave the gauge on it and reproduce the symptoms kind of test. I'm guessing both of these trucks have either a slowly leaking fuel injector, or another fuel system leak down problem. My only warranty repair over 6 new Fords was a fuel pump for the same symptom (even some white smoke I can't explain). The fuel pump had a check valve in it that had failed.
The cool thing was the dealer put in a pump on my diagnosis, and it actually fixed the problem and the work didn't casue any new ones. Only cost me $12 for the subs for the service writer and the mechanic.

OK, now that someone brought it up.... I have the same problem. It just started doing it regularly. It would happen every once and a while before. Now it's most of the time. No smoke though.
It just started warming up here. I think the temp. has something to do with this.
I don't know if my problem would be the same as others. I recently installed a supercharger. There is a new fuel pump in there. I did have all the injectors off. I guess it's possible that there is a leak but wouldn't I smell fuel? The o-rings were in good shape.
I would be interested to know how many are having this problem. My truck used to start right up most of the time. This is before and after the supercharger. Everything seems to be working ok otherwise. Anyone else have anything to add?

I don't know what the problem is, but this is just an truck engin, not a jet.
What pissed me off the most was that the dealer is not even trying to fix it.
I have a videotape of my truck cranking and cranking...... and finally starts smoking becouse so much fuel is dumped in there.
They have seen the video. They brought an engineer from Ford to look at it, and what does the stupid engineer says?
"it is normal he says"
"You don't drive far enough he says"
Ford has rejected my Lemon claim, so now I have filed it with a court. I am waiting for a trial date. My lawyer says it will be a jurry trial. I will keep it posted.
I am not alowed to drive my truck anymore until the case is over.
