Question New STP Oil Extender

Anyone heard the commercial advertising an oil extender by STP that is suppose to "stretch" your oil changes out to 6000 miles? That's all I've heard, nothing on the STP website yet either. Thoughts?

Thanks!

Nope, haven't heard about it.

The question is, "Why use it in the first place?"

Not only does Ford tell us that additives can void our warranty, but 6,000 miles is only 1,000 miles more than the Ford scheduled 5,000 mile oil change interval.

If you want to extend your oil changes, just go with synthetic oil.

Even with the new technology of today's oil, the basic concept of the combustion engine is still very out-dated. You may be able to go an extra 1000 miles, but I wouldn't recommend it. I used to build engines so I know a little about this subject. I had a couple street-race cars, and a couple track-race cars. I have used Mobil 1 sythentic oil for years. I still change my oil AND filter, every 2500 to 3000 miles like clockwork. For those people that think they can stretch a couple extra 1000 miles out of their oil, well, like the Fram commercial says "Pay little now, or pay a lot later". How true!!! I just did my first oil change on my new truck yesterday. Had 2762 miles, use Mobil 1 5W-30 and Mobil 1 filter. Jiffy Lube charged $55.00 for 6 qts. and filter. Good deal considering in 2000 they relocated the oil filter on the F-150s from the front bumper, to back on the engine block itself. It's a pain to get to in one's driveway. Do what you want, but I would stick to the 3 mo/3,000 mile theory. There's only so much technology in oil and engines. Diesels are an entirely different story.

This is the thing,

You can't put anything in your oil to stop it from oxidating. This is cause by long molecule chains being shear and increase the viscosity. The only way to get oil to last longer is to use one that has a uniform molecule structure. Either a group II+ conventional or a full synthetic. Also you must have a robust additive package to deal with any break down and stop any acid formation.

Stick to a high quality motor oil. If you want extended drains go with a synthetic that is designed from the ground up for that purpose.
