synthetic oil
msparks:
I am not denying the added benefits that come with synthetic oil. If the car manufacturers could make an automobile body that could last 50 years or more (and everyone would keep and could put up with the technological deficiencies of a 50 year old car)I think synthetic oils would be more popular. Realistically, most of us won't keep our trucks beyond 15 years and therefore we will never see the rewards of using synthetic oil. I realize you are in the business of selling synthetic oil and that's why you take the position you have. I am not saying that everyone should stop using synthetic oil...people should spend the money on whatever they want to...I just personally believe it is a waste of money.

I've been using Amsoil for 12 years but I've read that 70% of engine wear occurs at start up. How does Amsoil reduce wear at startup other than offering a 0W-30 oil which should flow more readily during cold starts? A friend of mine has a pre/post oiler on his F-350 diesel mostly to cool his turbo after shutdown. It's noisy but he thinks it's worth the $500 investment.
Basically if you believe the literature, synthetics give you extended drain intervals over fossil based oils. An engine with synthetic oil on a 12k drain interval should last as well as an engine running a fossil based oil on a 3k drain interval.

Synthetic oils are simply evolution. The same way the beta-cam didn't catch on is the same way synth's aren't (at least haven't). Now synth has started becoming a media/marketing buzz word to sell more widgets.
Beyond the fluids, there's not much left to fool with. Increase that change interval and your saving the environment, cruisin instead of tuning, racin instead of chasin.
I run:
*synlube 100k/150k mi. engine lube 110% synthetic 5w30
*30k mi. fiberglass 30 micron oil filters
*synlube lifetime differential oil
*LE 7500 power fluid (ATF)
q: Have I wasted my hard earned cash on these products?
a: More than likely, I have.
q: Does my car run better?
a: Possibly. It runs very well.
q: Will I continue to use the better fluids in the future.
a: Yes. Time is money. I'd rather have the extended drain intervals and peace of mind. Cost: it's worth it for me. For now.

I also agree with JDF. Performance increase, lowering of engine temp, and fuel mileage increases??? All of the above will be so minimal that nobody will notice a thing. No doubt over a very long period of time the engine will fare better, but in the short term synthetics are a waste of money.
regular oil, 97 5.4 f250, 93000 miles does not burn or leak a drop. had an 84 f150 i-6 sold it with 130,000 miles at that time it used no oil last i heard it went to alaska and back now has 200,000 still running strong.i take really good care so ususally when i sale a car it is to someone i know. i sold a 90 silverado now has 140,000, i sold a 91 cougar now has 150,000. all of them are running fine with no major problems.
my dad always told me changing oil and not the filter is like taking a shower and putting your dirty underware back on, i dont like the fact of putting oil and a filter on and not changing it but every 10,000 miles. what about blow-by and "trash" getting in? there?

I would have to say synthetic is a better oil. Is it worth the extra cost? I doubt it, sure you get extended oil changes but you more than make up for it in the extra cost. I had a 91 Ford Aerostar with a 3.0, it burned a quart every 4k when it was new and when I got rid of it a 140k it still burned just a quart of oil every 4k. Maybe it would not have burned that quart if I had used synthetic, I just can't justify the extra cost. Now the transmission, that's another story, I might still have it if I had used synthetic in it

A brand new porche 911 comes standard with Mobil 1.
It will burn a quart every 3K! It is engineered to do so.
So that throws out the theory on engine wear with synthetics. It is the tolerance design of the engine, not the quality of the oil that makes a difference.
